I'm going to have a couple of hours free tomorrow and want to hit a couple of stores in Boston. It's been years since I've been there which are the better stores to collectible vinyl and CD's?

    Thanks

Check out Nuggets on Commonwealth Avenue in Kenmore Square. Also, check out In Your Ear, which is further up Comm Ave, next door to rock club, The Paradise and a McDonalds, right after Boston University. It is probably too far to walk from Nuggets (unless it's a nice day), so you should probably take the T. Also, check out Looney Tunes on Boylston Street, which is in the opposite direction, around the corner from Berklee and Virgin Megastore. There is also a couple stores on Newbury Street - Newbury Comics (which is a chain, but one of the best chains in the country), CD Spins and I think another place I can't think of right now. Looney, CD Spins and Newbury (and Virgin) are all within a few blocks of each other.

Gotta go to Cambridge, across the river. Lots of places around Harvard Square. But further out, in Porter Sq. is my favorite place

Also, less than two miles from Harvard Square in Cambridge (on Mass Ave) is Cheapo Records, in Central Square. Lots of vinyl and lots of offbeat stuff of different genres.

Nuggets is still OK, though not as good as they were a few years ago.

In Your Ear is one of the few remaining classic used music stores, where you just might find ANYTHING related to music. The person who owns it, Reed, is also a good guy. The store on Commenwealth Ave near BU is a lot better than the one in Harvard Square on Mt. Auburn Street.

Looney Tunes used to be good, but the store got sold a few years ago, and they now pretty much suck: High prices, low turnover and not too exciting. (They used to feature good prices and high turnover before the new owners decided to squeeze every penny from every item in stock...)

Newbury Comics is probably the best mid-sized independent record chain left in the country. Decent prices on both new and used merchandise, though very little vinyl (and no used vinyl). If you want to shop new releases, they're the place to go.

CD Spins sucks hard. Always have. Basically, they're the McDonald's of used CD stores: They're franchised, they price based on computerized lists, and their stores (and employees) have no personality. I wouldn't waste my time.

Planet Music, on JFL Blvd. in Harvard Square, is worth a look.

Stereo Jack's, on Mass Ave near Harvard Square, is also worth a look, especially if you are into jazz. They're not as hot for rock (since the always opinionated Jack doesn't really care much about it). Also, if you want to TALK jazz, this is the store for you!

Sadly, one of the best used stores, Disc Diggers, closed last year.

Was that the one near the Davis Sq T stop in Somerville? That's an incredible bummer if so. It's been almost 10 years since I left Boston, but I still have tons of memories of finding all kinds of weird stuff there, all dirt cheap. Very sad....

    Quit it, I'm getting jealous.
Ain't no good record shops in this stinkin' one horse town.
I can't wait to get posted out again just to have a better choice!
