For De Palma my favourites are probably: Carrie, Dressed to Kill and Blow Out and then maybe Body Double just behind those three. Really enjoyed Femme Fatale, especially given it was made late in his career. Passion had potential but, for me, ended up being quite dull. I also really enjoyed Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Loved the period, soundtrack and pacing. Yeah, I'll definitely give it a read. Thanks.
May have mentioned before De Palma was keen on working with Jason Statham( thought he had Steve McQueen potential).. that idea / movie - partnership didn’t happen. JS has moved onto bigger projects methinks!!!!
Domino. No, I've not seen that one. Have heard bad things of it though. Have never been able to enjoy Raising Cain. Tried re-watching it several years back and had to switch it off. Maybe I'll have to give it another try. Yeah, that opening sequence of Snake Eyes is probably he best set-piece of his post-1990 work. Shame the rest of the film doesn't quite live up to the beginning. I've never heard that. I can't see Jason Statham fitting in De Palma's world, apart from Mission Impossible.
De Palma seen JS as some Steve McQueen (Great Escape ) type ..so maybe the film featured cars racing. Don’t forget JS was in a John Carpenter film. Maybe the English actor accepted less $$$. This was about a decade ago.
Just saw Phantom of the Paradise. Paul Williams score was a bit much for me but it fit the movie definitely. I did like his portrayal of Swan though. He seemed to be having a lot of fun there. All in all, it seemed a bit Rocky Horror-lite to me, but I give De Palma props for trying something different.
Raising Cain has been on my Amazon wish list for years, but it was always $37. Now it's dropped to $27. Still a bit more than I'd like to spend. Hopefully I can find it for less elsewhere sometime this year. I remember Passion being very stylish, and taking a very long time to develop. It got to the point where the viewer wonders if something is actually going to happen. But I love those slow burn kind of movies. ---------------------------- I guess not many people picked this up...raised it earlier in this thread and don't think there were really any comments about it. De Palma and De Niro, did a few films together early in their careers and they were recently released as a box set. Should make for interesting viewing. https://www.amazon.ca/Palma-Niro-Wedding-Greetings-Blu-ray/dp/B07GVYD6HB
Only seen it once not long after it was released and can remember liking it. It's essentially just a single-camera interview spliced with scenes of the films. It's co-directed/produced by Noah Baumbach(Squid and the Whale, Marriage Story). Definitely worth a watch for a fan.
I had to go back and dig up Pauline Kael’s description of the finale in her New Yorker review.... “This finale—a parody of Antonioni’s apocalyptic vision at the close of Zabriskie Point—is the greatest finish for any villain ever. One can imagine Welles, Peckinpah, Scorsese, and Spielberg still stunned, bowing to the ground, choking with laughter.” She was a huge, huge De Palma fan and her idolatrous reviews have not worn well over the years, but she was such a great writer that they’re worth digging up. I do think her very honest and heartfelt review of Carrie was responsible for De Palma’s ascension to the ranks of serious directors. (She really was that influential.)
