Forgive me if this is in the wrong section - I didn't think this applied to the marketplace ones.

I'm an infrequent seller, maybe only sell one thing every few months. But PayPal must have just implemented some new features this week, because I sold something last week and I had no issue. But now, the buyer has sent the payment, and PayPal is telling me that I cannot accept it until I become "verified", and in order to become "verified", I need to connect my bank account. Well, my bank account is already connected, and I know it is because I got the payment for the thing last week and there were no issues. Now all of a sudden I need to reconnect it?

I figured this wouldn't be an issue, but my bank has multiple different routing numbers, each for a different specific purpose, and their website is under construction so I can't find which one it's supposed to be! It's 11 PM right now so nobody's going to answer the phone on either the bank's end or PayPal's end (not that I expect a human to answer the phone at PayPal). So now the guy on Discogs who I promised shipment and tracking tomorrow is going to have to wait until I help PayPal sweep this screw-up under the rug. Blech.

Is this a new thing? Has anybody else dealt with it? Like I said, I used it 8 or 9 days ago with no issue whatsoever. It forced me to "accept" the payment (like I'm going to decline it), but it just went straight to my PayPal balance with the option to transfer to the bank. Are they getting rid of the PayPal balance entirely?

In regards to PayPal or the content of the thread?

In response to PayPal (?) asking you for information that you know they already have on file. I'd initiate a phone call from your end and ask them what is going on without giving the info.

You can set up a call quite easily to speak to a actual person. I've done it plenty of times. In this case you should be calling them to find out what the issue is. Don't try and fix this yourself without speaking to them first.

I'm with Carl. Be cautious of someone hacking your Paypal account. Call Paypal tomorrow.

Thanks all. I was pretty pissed off when I posted that, I didn't know how the hell to interpret that first comment.

There are no unusual transactions, everything there is something that I have done. And my addresses, cards, and bank info are all correct. But I'm probably overdue for a password change anyway, just done it. But I will be vigilant.

I've just moved and I'm wondering if maybe they're trying to get me to connect to my new bank here? The new bank was just set up a few weeks ago and I haven't used it extensively yet, everything is still coming from my old bank (which is PayPal linked). So I'm wondering if they're seeing that I have a new address and that's why they're doing this? But it still doesn't make sense to me, how would that affect my ability to put the money straight to my PayPal balance, which is what I want to do? The only thing I can think of is that they're getting rid of PayPal balance... unless maybe there's a lot of money laundering going on with PayPal balances or something and their solution is to force you to connect to a bank? But in my case, they screwed up...?

I dunno, this is weird and I'm not particularly happy about making this guy wait. And what damn luck that my bank's website is being renovated (probably to something "modern" and unusable) and half the features aren't working. But I will get on the phone with both tomorrow, hopefully maintain my patience, and hopefully get these 18 damn dollars into my account so this dude doesn't have to wait after I promised shipment within 24 hours. (I'm sure he'll be fine but I hate having to back out of my own promises, no matter what the circumstances are... if I got cut in half, I'd still feel guilty.)

Ack. Rant over (for now). We'll see what happens tomorrow. Maybe it's just a fluke and the whole thing will be cleared up in the morning.

Sorry, had the thread open and missed this post. I hadn't considered this but it's possible. The page it takes me to has the HTTPS, paypal.com and all the pertinent copyright info across the board but it is a completely different site design:

Go and type the actual paypal.com address into your search bar and log in that way and see what it says. If it gives you the same verification BS call them tomorrow.

Yes, that's how I got there. I signed into my PayPal after typing that address in, logged in, and saw my normal front page as it has been for years. It says I have a payment of $18 that I need to accept. When I click to accept it, it brings me to that old-design page that I posted the image of, where it says it wants me to "Get Verified" or "Deny Payment". There's nothing fishy about the address of that page, it is paypal.com and it does have the HTTPS secure thing - but that doesn't mean that PayPal itself wasn't hacked. I just assumed this particular portal hadn't been updated to the stupid "modern" look that the rest of PayPal had - I hadn't considered that it might be a scam. But I don't know for sure until I call, I guess.

There's also the chance that it's kicked my linked bank off by some bug, or maybe they were upset that I spoke disparagingly of their annoying web design. Maybe something happened in the three or four years since I last did a bank transfer (I always just use the PayPal balance). Maybe it's a scam. Maybe it's a new verification feature. Maybe it's some strange glitch and PayPal isn't even aware of it. I was just (upset and) curious if this had happened to anyone else. It just made no sense as I didn't need to do this a week ago.

Dude, talk about wasting time. Stop typing and just give them a call, already!

Their support is open 24/7 and typing paragraph after paragraph won't change anything or help at all. Meanwhile, they're just a phone call away. In the 4h from the start of the thread to the last post, this could've been resolved many times over.

Well, judging by the fact that their website says they only have phone support 12 hours of the day, I assumed that meant they didn't have phone support 24 hours of the day. I posted here to see if anybody else had experienced this issue, where you can't receive your money until you link a bank account that's already linked using what @PaulKTF accurately deduced is a fishy-looking webpage. And even if their phone line was open at midnight, I wasn't about to do battle with a robot answering machine trying to tell it that either my account got screwed up or that their system might be hacked while I've got four other people in the house trying to sleep.

All I wanted to know, in the interim where a call was not possible and/or feasible per my own situation, was if anybody else had experienced something like this, and if so, how they were able to do it, in the hopes that I could solve it on my own and get this guy his CD when I promised. If that's wasting time, then crown me the king of time-wasting.

Well, only wasting time for you ; not for us. Calling them would get you the definitive answer the quickest, hence why more than one person suggested doing just that. I'm assuming you likely did not yet call them to get to the bottom of this?

I agree with you that it smells fishy but you should confirm with them (IMHO) as opposed to assume one way or the other.

Okay just got off the phone with support - this is indeed a new feature they added over the weekend but haven't totally finalized yet, where a bank account must be linked to use PayPal balance. Me personally, I find that to be a stupid idea, but it could be that PayPal balance was used for money laundering or something like that and they needed extra security. The "link a bank" portal is apparently still using the old GUI, I'm told that will be updated soon. (Oh joy, more bad web design.)

Well I'm glad that my frustration at discovering a roadblock after making a promise and after support was turned down turned into this wonderfully hostile thread. I'll report this to the Gorts to be locked as it's been settled and I'll leave it up to them as to whether or not it should be deleted.

Wasn't hostile. Just a suggestion to call which was the right way to get a definitive answer. Glad it wasn't anything nefarious and I agree it looked rather suspicious.

The bank link might be for withdrawals and they decided to make it universal. You're right in that PayPal was used for money laundering in the past.
