Actress and singer Carol Channing died early Tuesday at the age of 97 at her home in Rancho Mirage, California. Her longtime publicist B. Harlan Boll confirmed the entertainer’s death from natural causes.

Whether you knew her as Dolly, Lorelei, Muzzy or just Carol, Channing was a one-of-a-kind talent who captivated any audience. Her razor-sharp wit, gravelly voice and big, bright smile became the trademarks of a performer who originated some of Broadway’s most iconic roles throughout the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Channing continued to share her gifts on stage into her late 90s, enshrining her in a class of Broadway luminaries all her own.

Harlan Boll said “it is with extreme heartache” that she announced “the passing of an original Industry Pioneer, Legend and Icon.”

“I admired her before I met her, and have loved her since the day she stepped... or fell rather... into my life,” the publicist said in a statement. “It is so very hard to see the final curtain lower on a woman who has been a daily part of my life for more than a third of it.”

 

Very sad news. Such a great talent and legend. RIP.

 

Wow. She looked great in the picture above. I know stage was her main thing, I remember seeing her on various variety and talk shows when I was growing up.

 

Just talking to the wife about her Sunday. She was one of the few stars of Skidoo still alive.

She was only sixteen days shy of her 98th birthday as well.

 

I actually though she was already dead. Like Abe Fagota.

 

I enjoyed her appearances on Hollywood Squares and Laugh-in. She appeared on many varitiy shows in the 70's and 80's. Interesting lady.

 

Very sad, I always liked her and I got to meet her once. She appeared at a local Fourth of July event in the early '80s. she had a very quick wit and was extremely funny.

Hello Dolly was my first Broadway type show. My folks took me to the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion here in LA when she came through.

 

Yeah, Abe VIGODA died two and a half years ago. I'd delete that if I were you.

You know, if that was supposed to be funny, it isn't.

 

Well they were two people for years people thought they had already passed although they hadn’t . I seriously thought she already had. Thus the comparison.

 

Hopefully the misspelling was unintentional and not intended to be humorous.

 

I was surprised that she was still alive. Good for her living until 97

My mother went to Lowell High school in San Francisco with Carol....partially at the same time...

 

RIP Carol.

 

My mother used to say Carol Channing’s voice drove her crazy. It was highly unusual. I guess we have Kristen Chenowith to take her place. And in my own personal hell: Kristin Chenoweth will be there.
