What is it about cartoonists/animators that make them unable to discern where the front and back covers of books, CDs and records should be??? It happens all the freaking time!!!
My ongoing complaint about "Zits": it puts the parents in the wrong era. That flashback is clearly to the early 70s, and the mom is pregnant, which means Jeremy must've been born around 1973 at the latest. Yet the strip takes place in modern day, so the character was born in the 90s (for that particular 2014 strip). And why'd they name him "Jeremy" and not "Jeremiah"? Makes no sense!
What is it about cartoonists that makes them feel the need to label everything? Do they really have so little faith in their readers that they think no one would recognize the pretty darn iconic album covers?
Well if everybody is streaming, nobody is paying much attention to the album covers. I agree with your sentiment. The thing is, though, for example, myself: I had seen the cover for "Dark Side" and knew it was an album by Pink Floyd but it wasn't until the 20th Anniversary edition was advertised that I knew it was called "Dark Side Of The Moon". I was 13 at the time.
The cartoonist either isn't "hip" enough to know about Pearl Jam, or his editor didn't think the readership would understand a reference to same and made him change it? But Pearl Jam/Jeremy would fit perfectly.
In the example, notice that Darth & Trump are not labeled. And yes, cartoons, especially editorial cartoons, often require labeling. This goes back 100s of years. A more up- to- date version of that 'toon would have Xi Jinping, leader of China, holding the Dark Side LP as China has recently been literaally investigating that side of the moon, unless some fake news trolls discover otherwise. The Darth Vader image, while getting the desired laugh, may be wrong as,while not a Star Wars expert,I don't think Earth and its moon were ever part of the narrative, since the stories are set in a galaxy far, far, away.
