    *during an earthquake!

We just had a 6.5 here in Idaho and the CD never skipped while the house swung back and forth for 20 seconds.

Try that with your silly $20k vinyl rig! Ha!

  2. It's hard to believe that someone would spend $20k on a vinyl rig when the people who manufacture the records we buy play them on Technics SL's and Audio Technica AT-120's!

I have many CDs that sound better than many 70’s or 80’s repressings. But generally, IMO, most original pressings sound the best outside of audiophile versions, etc

I'll concede that for a 6.5, but I've been playing records during earthquakes and my rig at the time didn't register a problem. I think it could have been because of the turntable base I had then (Gingko Audio Cloud). It took the waves and passed rolled them through like shock absorbers.

The earthquakes were nowhere near a 6.5 however. 3's and 4's I think.

My old Rotel 855 would skip like crazy when it was on my rack in a room with wooden floors and someone walked close to it. My turntable/tonearm on the same rack never did.

I'm not sure I would have noticed what happened wrt the music if I was in the midst of any earthquake / tremor that I was able to feel.

When you are in the middle of an earthquake LPs skipping are just about the least of your worries: You got bigger fish to fry!

Just don't stream during an earthquake. You risk having a brick wall fall on you.

Once a week I take the car out for a twenty minute drive to charge the battery. And so I missed the earthquake! Darn. We don't get many earthquakes in Idaho.

When I was a kid, I slept through a few earthquakes, while my mother stood over me with outstretched arms, to catch any furniture that might fall on me...

Wouldn't the rumble of the earthquake affect the sound?:frog:
I would challenge a high end CD player other than a non-skip discman, against a vintage AR turntable properly suspended. I had an apartment party in my 20's. The floor literally rocked, and the AR platter bounced slowly... it never skipped!

The CD player in my 87 Acura always skips when I stop at a light because of a rough idle. If I don't want it to skip I have to slip the clutch a little.

I'm good. I'm good, not living in Idaho. I'm good, without earthquakes. I'm good without playing CDs. I ripped my entire collection so I the discs are kept for archival reasons. Otherwise, my records play fine, even when your part of the world is trying to kill you. I get at least a 5 day notice if a hurricane ever decides to come knocking on my door.

I have a $20k vinyl rig, but I have a friend who produces jazz, and the vinyl rig he uses to accept or reject test pressings puts mine to shame. Maybe I just don't buy records from labels that go cheap on turntables for evaluating test pressings.

Although I don't have a CD transport/player, vinyl is not my only source. If an earthquake hits I can still do better than CD as long as electrical service remains.
