I haven't found any version other than the one you mention on DVD that isn't cut. I do have one that has both the B&W and colorized versions which said it is restored...and the images aren't too bad...but it is the short version. The colorization actually helps bring out details that are not obvious in the old, dirty, scratchy B&W version. An example is the carpet in the scene with banquet with the Lord Mayor of London. In the colorized version, there is a distinct pattern to the rug. In the B&W it is lost.

But like you, it would seem that someone somewhere would do a real restoration of this film. Funny that if they had the money to do colorization (even poorly) they could have found that extra 18 minutes.

My wife and I refer to all those incisor-enhanced actors and actresses as having "Bad Inspector Gadget teeth!"

I saw this in the theater last year, and have the blu-ray at home for this weekend. Very enjoyable movie - I learned a lot about the writing of A Christmas Carol that I did not know (I realize it is not 100% historically accurate, but some parts of it are). I'd love to see Plummer in a traditional setting of the story.

I also read this last year after seeing the movie - it is an edition of A Christmas Carol with Dickens' handwritten notes & edits included. I could picture him writing it after seeing this movie.

If you are sick and tired of the cliche'd Christmas movies, I just saw Anna and the Apocalypse in the theater. The zombie apocalypse happens at a little town in Scotland. At Christmas time. And it's a musical.

I'm the opposite I don't enjoy the ant-Christmas movies, and don't we have enough Zombie TV shows and movies? Give me a sugary happy Christmas movie which is an oxymoron in this sick, twisted, disgusting world we live in where they're trying to snuff Santa...

How about "The Man in the Santa Claus Suit" with Fred Astaire? Hasn't been on British TV for years, but I remember it fondly. Not sure it would stand the test of time, but then again it is Christmas!!

...and another American TV Christmas film never shown any more in the UK is "Yes Virginia There Is A Santa Claus" with Richard Thomas and Charles Bronson - well Christmassy!

For those of you with a Roku stick or Roku TV, they have a free channel called Christmasflix. I watched a couple of old TV plays that were quite good. (You have to set aside the poor video quality, but for me a good story makes me forget lesser video quality.) They were:
A Christmas Affair - very charming 1950's teleplay version of the Robert Mitchum movie. Sweet to see how innocent it is.
A String of Blue Beads - in color (or colorized, I'm not sure). Guy loses his fiancee but makes friends with a child who has an older sister.

That looks like my kinda meat :D

I've watched a couple of sappy traditional Xmas movies thus far this season (White Christmas and It's A Wonderful Life), and also a few crappy holiday-horror flicks (The Elf, A Christmas Slay, and Secret Santa). So I've got both the warm-n-fuzzy and the gross-and-tasteless bases covered. :D
