Definitely try downloading disc by disc. It can be a pain with bigger sets, but you get there in the end.
Also, the discs are pretty much always out of order when downloading. The store page will have a list of discs lower down near the bottom, which is a handy guide. Makes the whole thing feel a bit dodgy, but hey, I was able to get old Reiner, Gould, Boulez and Abbado sets for about $15 each!
I love posts like this. I am going to listen to some of his recordings from the EMI/Warners box tomorrow. My best buddy is constantly praising his Mahler, so I may start there.
Still happy that I got it for € 59,99, $ 70,00 back in 2014, for Munch I paid € 89,99, $ 105,00 DG, Decca and Mercury cubes were all € 99,99, $ 116,00. Today 35 or less Cds for the same price.
I am in the process of tagging them now. So far, I have found the first 2 tracks missing off disc 13. However, these tracks (1812 Overture and Mephisto Waltz No.1 according to discogs) also appear on disc 32. Does anyone know if these are just the same recordings on 2 different discs in the physical box set?
I just checked. It's the same recordings according to the book. They were first issued in mono and then again (the album on CD 32) in stereo. In the box, however, the stereo version is used on both CDs 13 and 32.
That came up a bunch for the Gould box, heaps of missing tracks because of duplication. I ended up copy and pasting the tracks, just so I would have the full album experience if I wanted to for that particular disc.
I just bought the Reiner box too and am downloading one disc at a time. Great deal, many thanks to @jɑmbo for posting the link! Is there somewhere a pdf version of the booklet in english at least? I could do with somthing better than the one included with the download, if available. Else, I won't be too greedy given the price paid Once finished, I'll tag it with mp3tag or Qoobar probably, doing it manually would be a pain
I haven't found a proper booklet but there is a tracklist on discogs: Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony Orchestra – Fritz Reiner - The Complete RCA Album Collection (2013, CD)
I'm sorry, I went back a few pages and found only the post by jɑmbo. I have missed yours. Pleas accept my apologies. Thank you very much!
Nitram, you are completely right. I received the handsome box today, with the composer's name in embossed gold on the lift-off outer box and no place for padding (or extra Böhm recordings):
Yes, but front only. (I should also add that two of the three Mozart opera recordings are interesting from the perspective of the medium: they are some of the earliest stereo recordings, made in 1955.)
One funny detail I have not seen before is that with the 2 CD cases the numbering is reversed (but not with the 3 or 4 CD cases)!
Looks nice. I get it probably tomorrow. They make so much mistakes with Böhm. (More than in other boxes) In the Opera Box were many spines complete wrong (Wrong Composer and work), but at least the discs and front and back cover were ok. Now they did mistakes in the 2 Cd Cases. No big deal for me as long the recordings are good but what I wonder what will be wrong with the DGG Orchestra box next month?
What a beautful box design! Loved it. (I´m biased, I admit cubes are my favorite classical mega box set shape) But at the same time, what a terrible choice of font, the ugliest I´ve seen in box-sets indeed. I can foresee someone not used to classical music seing this box-set somewhere and thinking: "Who is this Harl Bohm?" or perhaps "Is this HARL 8 ohm a new brand of audiofily speakers" ? Anyway... wonderful box-set regardless of the font.
Yes, I like those cubes as well. IMO the best format (and space-friendly too) Sony may have the best books, etc., but their boxes are often awkward (e.g. Harnoncort box. Where to put it?)
Good thing my setup is 8 ohm then! I any case, somebody's going to take a chunk out of my budget between this one (looks great, and bluray audio Ring, yay!) and the upcoming DG Orchestral box (not to mention Markevitch & Furtwangler).
