I have to admit that I have not been able to warm up to any of Zinman's Beethoven. I always thought he pushed the retooled tempos to the hilt. A great conductor with other composers though.

This was my first Mackerras disc and I still like it, especially the Falla. It was a high fidelity recording on Vanguard Stereolab in the USA. Vanguard notes that "master tapes are recorded on a custom-built mixer..., and at 30 IPS... along with a revolutionary new tape..." I don't know what tape they may be referring to. It was first issued about 1965 here.

I'm not sure but it could be a Marc Aubort recording.

I have the cycle by Zinman and think it is about average. The good news is it was not an expensive set ...

How do you like the non-HIP performance? I do not think it is as polished as the Vivaldi's by I Solisti Veneti with Claudio Scimone and I have that set ...

BTW, this LP set I own probably includes many of the CD's in your set ...

I'm very satisfied with I Musici musical and soulful approach (I'm not saying that all HIP ensembles sound too formal and mechanistic for me, but many, indeed, do :hide:). I clearly see why they were that big in their era. I rather thoroughly compared I Musici and I Solisti Veneti via available samples and I Musici won mostly due to lower price, while both ensembles sounded absolutely competitive and strong. I still have some corresponding (without duplication) I Solisti Veneti CDs on my wish list (for example, opera overtures).

As for your original I Musici LP sets on Philips (green and red) - my Decca box contains both of them in their entirety, as well as the entire choral set under Vittorio Negri. Remaining 11-12 CDs comprise various choral works and concertos (including some J.S. Bach arrangements) performed by various non-HIP bands. A great deal, IMO.

Edit: probably by "green and red" sets I meant later CD versions of the initial Philips LP sets. IIRC, there were 19 CDs in total, not sure how many LPs can accomodate them...

I've heard the whole set - indeed, it's pretty average, although it contains some "poppish revelations" here and there. The best of them were the solo violin in the last movement of Eroica and the oboe cadenza in the first movement of the 5th, the worst - laughable tempo of the Choral's Turkish March. In the end I pulled the trigger and bought only one CD - Nos. 5 & 6. It's pretty consistent, and my mother likes it.

I was not sure if I liked Brahms or not, but after hearing Bernstein - Die 4 Sinfonien on DG 2 DoCD (pictures to large to upload) this has changed. Yes I like Brahms.

To fulfill my desire to hear great voices this new album on DG was the right choice.

How does his fortepiano sound? There have been single CDs of fortepiano where the sound of a particular fortepiano drove me up the wall.:D So overall I prefer to stay with the piano interpretations.
