Jay will endorse Janowski's Brahms, and the sound alone makes it a contender, IMO. Really something. Warsaw-born Janowski gives a rich, hearty Central European interpretation, nothing radical and very 'right'-sounding. Bruckner, I only really started getting into in the last year. Still dabbling, learning, listening. I have not heard any of Janowski's Bruckner as yet.

Jay is undoubtedly our resident Mahler expert. I am curious as to what he thinks of the symphonies by Brahms and Bruckner ...

    Glad to hear it!

I am amazed with how much stuff you have. How long have you been collecting classical music?

Jay will endorse. Janowski is one of the only Brahms conductors I listen to. In fact, I'm listening to him now.

    Only he
    and Lenny B
    are on my PC
    doing B(rahms).

I haven't heard Bruckner by Janowski, though. But Bernstein playing Bruckner is one of the high points on the new box set. I liked it better than any I've heard before. LB only did the 9th, I guess--at least on CBS. That was disappointing. I mean, 60 CDs, all that Haydn, and only one Bruckner Symphony.

    US/EU international mail delivery

UPDATE: my last Greek eBay buyer just sent me an email letting me know his LP parcel arrived...six weeks after I posted it. The other four parcels sent to Greece took 3-4 weeks, usually 7-10 days. Something is happening and I'm not sure what it is.

I find it hard to blame all these late package deliveries on both sides of the Atlantic on the heavy volumes associated with Christmas and New Year. Aren't we heading into late January?

That sounds like a line from the first half of a horror or sci-fi movie. :)

How do you like Weinberger's Bach organ works? I do not own a complete set, just individual recital discs. I had planned to go to an organ recital tonight -- starting in five minutes, actually -- but I just wasn't feeling up to it after a busy weekend. Looked like an interesting program, I'm unfamiliar with everything but the Bach and Son pieces.

Foun my favorite Zauberflöte - again by the one and only the great late HvK with his 1980ies Berlin rendition.
The artists may not be the best ever but the steady tempo and flow make this magic flute a more entertaining and exciting work.
After all music of this calibre usually sound best when you play every note exactly like the composer heard in his mind.
Some say his 1960 recording in Vienna was even better. Who knows, I thought I couldn't take another magic flute, Mackerras was especially poor - but when played with so much drive it is always a joy to hear this fairy tale once more..

Found one more great disc by my favorite piano player, the honorable wise Vlado Perlemuter. His rendition of Schumann's Kreisleriana took a good while to grow on me, but finally I got it.
Just love his strong way of playing, the exact care for every note , something he shares with Herbert von Karajan..

This is the piano CD I meant from 2006 with great soznd quality and a fine grand piano...

My first complete set of those pieces. Shortly after, I bought Rostropovich/Richter, which I preferred.

I am listening to this now and I can say that the performance is excellent! The piano is captured beautifully, though there is a moderate amount of audience noise (coughing, etc.) If the latter isn't an issue for you, I'd say grab this one. I see the used prices on amazon are dirt cheap.

While you're at it, I strongly suggest this:

Very special music, IMO. Also dirt cheap and superb performances. Sound is very good. It's the second time Brilliant has issued the set and I wouldn't wait for it to go OOP again.

    Most recently played

One of my 50p charity shop LP buys from last week. A 1961 Beethoven's 7th Symphony by Colin Davis on EMI.

    I really like this one.

It's all over the TV at the moment, the second movement, as it's used in that new film The King's Speech.
