I am currently trying out 3 modern piano trios written between 1984 and 1995. The Lalo Schifrin Hommage a Ravel is playing now.

This is something to ask about before you buy any used Polygram (DG, Philips, Decca/London) fatboy CDs on AM or eBay. I've gotten two I can remember in which the discs had been destroyed by rotten brown foam.

The Melos do my favorite Death and Trout.

The same problem happened to a number of my CD and LP sets. It is a bigger problem for CD sets since the CD's housed in those fatboy jewel cases are not protected by sleeves. Fortunately, those sticky disintegrated foam only left residue on the CD label side. I was actually angry with my own oversight ...

Their Death and the Maiden (DG 2530 533, from 1975) is second to none.

Should check out this one. Mine was recorded by the Amadeus Quartet.

I wasn't aware of the CD issue since I don't collect them. In my case, a lot of my collection is from the 70s and 80s, and it sat mostly idle and unused for the last 10 years.

While I have bought some used CD's on Amazon over the past year, they generally tend to be single disc.

My impacted CD sets were mainly purchased in the mid 80's. I guess the useful life of the foam is less than 25 years ...

Are you talking about this one? Was it ever on analog vinyl?

I'll receive my brand new copy (still shrinkwraped) of the 2009 edition of this Haydn box tomorrow. I paid 33 euros (46 dollars) shipped. I'm as glad as you :)

Looks like that was recorded in 59 and as such had to be available first on LP. I bought the CD a few weeks ago ...

This set has a steep price tag.

George, Have you ever seen this set at Academy?

    I haven't. But I wouldn't have grabbed it if I had.

I have seen McCabe's set of the sonatas, but from the samples I have heard of his playing, I am not interested.

The only set I own (well, Ok nearly complete, I'm missing one Opus) of Haydn's stuff is his string quartets.

I already have one Complete Haydn Symphonies cycle by Ivan Fischer on Nimbus. They are regular CD's and not CDR's. Then I have a few LP sets by Marriner, Karajan and Jochum, though they clearly do not make up another full cycle.

Yeah Haydn symphonies might not be for everyone. :sigh:

The only Haydn Piano I have heard that I even remotely cared for so far was by Brendel

ONE of the reasons besides price I jumped on that set was I only had these 2 Haydn works/CD's in my collection.

I enjoy them, but I have a few dozen and feel that is enough for me.

    That's an awesome set! :righton:
