And the price (at least at Amazon)

I bought that set during the ImportCDs "Sale" (for about $10). There are some very good recordings, but some disppointments and a lot of repeated repertoire. I think if EMI had a - say - 6 disc set of selected DuPre, I would have been perfectly happy.

In comparison I bought the Oistrakh set at the same time and love almost all of it.

Have you ever heard PDQ Bach's version of the first movement presented as a sporting event? It's actually a great introduction to sonata form.

I am rather suprised at any possible notion that these or other similar operatic artists who signed contracts to record complete operatic works, had any special 'agreed' stipulations in their contracts or form of say: whether or not 'highlights recordings' would be also be made available. And doubly so, both regarding and considering what the contents of that highlights disc was to actually contain. Those decisions were the perogative of the owners of such projects - the record company. Otherwise, imagine all the 'potential cat fights' that would have ensured. :D

Looks very interesting... vintage RCA. Too bad, this one doesn't seem to be out on CD. There is one other Lawrence Tibbets recording but it's from the 1920s.

If you like HvK's approach I'd consider the stand alone Galleria cd of the 1977 6th a must buy. I found the 1963 too fast myself less of gentle stroll around the countryside.

i've seen a stereo London recording of this conducted by George Guest.i would have bought the LP,but is was in too poor a condition.i was not impressed by
the work, but it would be nice to hear other recordings.i suspect the work's appeal is it's simple devotional quality, but for me it seems very stodgy.

I see your point about the current price asked for that 6 CD edition. I was lucky when I brought my copy, I think I paid no more than $20 .

Very interesting, especially the Saint-Sans, they seem to be high quality productions, I wish Naxos would consider to release these on SACD also.

Seraphim S-60101.i believe this reissue in EMI's budget series($2.50 as of 1/70) must have been issued in late '69.i have been unable to determine
the original issue, producer & engineer, but apparently it was recorded in
    Kingsway Hall,10/10-11/62(Symphony) & 11/12/62(Overture).elegant
    performances,decent sound.

  24. Bizet: Opera "Carmen"

    QUOTE

"When produced, March 3, 1875, the directors were proven more or less correct; the story was condemed as "obscene." The music was accused of Wagnerism. After four performances the production was nearly withdrawn; tickets were being given away. If it continued to run at all it was probably through the excitement of scandal that such a work should be shown publicly.

Bizet died on the third of June, victim of a throat condition compounded by acute mental depression. His sudden death gave an added morbid interest in the opera which was so perilously close to closing; audiences improved. A Vienna production was mounted and led very quickly to a tour. The tour was a triumph and Paris critics began to reverse their positions. By 1883, when the work was revived, the producers were reviled for not giving a sufficiently realistic and colorful setting of what, the same critics felt, was an obvious masterpiece"
