I would get this one, as Mark Obert Thorn did the transfer. I am not sure why there has not been a physical CD release, but a FLAC download is only $7.25:

This looks real interesting, just like my Rachmaninov plays Rachmaninov ...

As I never bothered with the EMI, I decided to buy this download of the Naxos. It's a really fast download, FWIW - but no liner notes or even a cover image. I'll listen to it soon and post my thoughts. I am sure this is the best transfer available, though.

As for now, I am enjoying the Franck on this CD:

No such luck, I was on the thread nearly an hour after you first posted that. :(

Next time you're going to have to offer something that isn't to George's taste, that's the only way I (or the rest of us for that matter) are going to stand a chance. :D

Try to keep George busy with answering countless questions about Sviatoslav Richter. In an exhaustively detailed manner, with posted samples, etc. He may miss another offer then. :D

Talking about George, isn't it our founding father's birthday today?

    Happy Birthday, George!

If so, I'm rushing to add some Richter to my today's playlist in George's honor! Schubert sonatas on BBC will fit, I guess. Happy Birthday George!

More piano is on the menu.

I got this record recently because I love Debussy and I know the label (Calliope) for its excellent sound quality. The pianist, Theodore Paraskivesco, was completely unknown to me.
The recording is exceptional, a very lifelike piano is laying in front of you with all the characteristics and colors of a real instrument.
Now the performance is not bad either. I do not want to get into all the details, if someone is interested to read a comprehensive review, here 's a nice one from Grammophone:

I have several of the McGlinn recordings - Showboat and Kiss Me, Kate. I bought them when complete recordings of these works were unavailable. I used to have Anything Goes but the Patti LuPone 1987 recording blew it out of the water. And frankly the 2000 revival recording of Kiss Me, Kate is better than McGlinn's.

They are a little stiff - operetta-ish. This works for Showboat. With that exception, you are better off with actual Broadway casts

Now enjoying this great download only release from Naxos. Lots of tape hiss, beautiful piano tone and open sound on this one:

I'm kind of glad and frustrated at the same time seeing that this Archival series finally received FLAC treatment. I bought the Boult cycle of Brahms symphonies about 2 years ago from Classics Online, and mp3 was all they had at the moment (although they had been already selling FLAC rips from a few physical releases in their "audiophile" section by that time). Oh well, at least the Brahms is in mono and has the highest bitrate, so for $3.99 per "album" (minus some coupon points) it wasn't a complete rip-off. And that was the only case when I bought anything in a lossy format.

OK, thanks John, the point is taken. Now the [rhetorical] question is: can I get those actual Broadway casts at the same price. But who knows...
