Get whatever gets your wattage going! :D
Personally I'm very happy with a modern Yamaha AVR.
Tube stuff is way outta my price realm if ever went bad expensive to fix.

My understanding is you can blow a $200-300 tube pretty easily. At least with solid state, you don't have that kind of problem. Not sure if you do not set the bias right, you can damage the tubes/amp. Perhaps a class-A SS amp is the way to go ...

I am not into video much. My wife did 95% of the tv watching in my household. Most class-A amp is low-powered, two-channel and pretty pricey ...

Do you already have a surround setup? The rate I am going, I will never hear the 5.1 surround sound even though I have close to 400 hybrid SACD's ...

Far be it from me to ignite a tube vs. solid state dispute, but I would suggest that anyone considering changes to his amplification should at least audition the modern amps known as "T-amps" or "Class T" amps. They're small, many are dirt cheap, and to my ear at least some of them are astonishing performers. In fact, I came to the conclusion that even with quite conventional, older speakers, one of these bested my old McIntosh/Magnepan combination, and so I have gone in that direction myself. In the end, you need to satisfy your own ears and draw your own conclusions, but I'd say these new contenders offer an alternative that should not be ignored. To bring things vaguely on-topic and away from something more appropriate to the "hardware" forum, the principal virtue I've heard from them is surprisingly good definition--I find that orchestral choirs, for instance, stand out in uncommonly bold relief. I think it's a function of much greater channel separation than we're used to from more conventional designs, but that's just my theory.

Disclaimers: Not everyone agrees on this subject (suprise!), and my own equipment has tended toward the elderly that I could pick up without spending boatloads of money.

I have 3 that I have been listening to mostly; Shubert Symphonies in C maj and B minor SACD RCA Red Seal; Shubert Symphonies No. 8 & No. 9, Telarc Scottish Chamber Orchestra, but I bought it because is was recorded by the great Tony Faulkner. But, I am also impressed with Eric Whitacre and WaterNight which is some excellent choral music which is just excellent.
