This is the only DG RTR that I have, and it is indeed quite nice. Have a few Deccas, but they're 3.5ips. They sound good, but...

I'll PM you on the other one.

IIRC, the London Phase 4 label was phased out at the beginning of the digital era. I have quite a few of these recordings in my LP collection ...

One of the reasons I bought the Abbado Mega-Box was to get his Brahms cycle. The box didn't cost all that much more than the Brahms discs alone. I've only heard Symphony 1 so far - but I really liked it.

No...I have a couple of those Angels with the dowel rod, which I always thought was an interesting way to package an LP...just stick it on your shelf and easily pull out what you want.

I think this set of the Brahms Symphonies by Abbado is truly excellent.

A Klemperer Mahler 7th Symphony at 101 minutes...............has to be pure listening torture.
It has long being strongly rumoured, that EMI's vaults held quite a few 'unable to release' Klemperer recorded performances, due to his wide conducting varience in judging tempos etc.
I always thought Reginald Goodall and his self styled ' profunity' and associated affectations, in everything he touched regarding his documented Wagner recorded performances, 'took the prize & cake every time for trying listeners' patience.

I have never heard a Goodall recording…dare I take the chance? :) There are instances in the opening movement of that performance of Mahler 7 where the ensemble playing is noticeably sketchy…you can tell that they are accustomed to playing this work at a much different tempo, and they are "pulling" things along by anticipating entrances, melody gets to the beat slightly before the accompaniment does, etc. By contrast, his Bruckner 7 with the Philharmonia of 1962, has tempi that are very reasonable and I think fit the work very well, which contrasts with a lot of "modern" Bruckner conductors who love to bask in the music's titanic glory for much too long, IMHO.

I used similar logic when I bought the Karajan Symphony Edition a few years ago since I was really after the Bruckner Symphonies and some Haydn Symphonies I did not have (have the 77 Beethoven Symphonies cycle on LP) and they were very pricey as singles or set (the Bruckner set). The mega box (37 CD's) actually saved me money ...

Inquiring minds want to know: Has there ever been a cover photo of Ms Grimaud without a Come Hither expression?

Pardon me but I don't even know who Andris Nelsons is. I went with Esa-Pekka Salonen over twenty years ago and somehow liked his style when he was not so well-known stateside ...

Villa Lobos/Rachmaninov/Cantaloube. Stokowski, Moffo, Stokowski's Orchestra. RCA Germany.

Ms Moffo has her own expressive expression. Her singing is very nice as well. Stokowski is just there for the ride. :)

I've been reading "The Flamethrowers" by Rachel Kushner. It's set primarily in the art world of NYC in the 70's, and Morton Feldman has been mentioned twice. So I pulled out "Triodic Memories" to accompany my reading.

Believe it or not it's high rez.

Well, in another forum, this recording was opined as her best ever. Recorded at age 15. (Probably come-hithering to a not too distant wolf in this very photo) :)
