Oddly, I liked the early Schubert in that box, but didn't care for the "Unfinished" at all. I deferred listening to the 9th as a consequence.

I also listened to the openings of Mahler's 6th and 5th from that box several days ago. I had just enjoyed Tennstedt's 6th, and wanted to do bit of comparison. The sound quality of Abbado's 6th was very strange: quite distant, eliminating the tension in the music. I played the openings of my recordings by Bernstein and Solti as well, and Abbado sounded anemic. I then switched to his 5th. The sound quality was much better, but the introductory passages were taken much slower than in any other performance. I recalled that when I first heard this I was put off by it, but this time I found it lyrical in a way I had never associated with the passage before. So - the message is ears change, mood changes and response changes. Maybe one day, I'll give his Unfinished another try.

As a friend of mine once said, you have to put on different ears for different kinds of music - and different interpretations I guess, but he wasn't into classical.

Berliner Philharmoniker have been trying to choose a new chief conductor for about 12 hours now. No results yet. I think I'm going to go to bed after the Mendelssohn symphony...

Mendelssohn's Third. The 'Scottish'. Last week, first listening: weird, is this Mendelssohn? (But the Hebrides made a lasting effect on me - on stereo system, not with headphones like now. Powerful.) Now the second listening: not bad, actually, but perhaps not "romantic" enough (from the late twentieth century understandig of the "romantic")? Then again, there are moment that simply silence me, Adagio is finely crafted, not too much in a sea of "churning emotions". It's a library loan, but considering buying it - even though there's no way to listen to the Blu-ray audio. The hybrid would have been enough for me.

I'm still having that LP. Never loved it - except the pretty cover. Was "Elvira Madigan" a film?

I suspected it was some seventies romantic TV-series but clearly confused it with something else.

I haven't heard them, sorry. BUT I have heard enough of Berman's work to conclude that everything by him is a wise purchase.

Not to be confused with his second, the symphony about ears: "Lobe Gesang."
