I'm loving this Shostakovich symphonies box. Disc number 6 tonight, Symphony No. 7 'Leningrad': Shostakovich: Complete Symphonies. Vasily Petrenko, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
Bartok: Piano Concerto No. 1 & Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Zoltan Kocsis, Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer. Philips
Probably the last disc for tonight: Beethoven: Symphonies Nos. 3 & 8. Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä. BIS
I have Zimerman playing those works with him conducting and the Polish orchestra. The sound quality and performance is incredible!
I need to listen to those great Moravec Chopin discs you recommended. But for now, I need to hear Kissin's great live version of the F Minor Fantasy.
Here is a fine Youtube post that technically breaks down the structure of the Fantasy in F Minor......IMO one of the greatest solo piano pieces ever written.
My opinion is that is a very good set and I definitely recommend it. The performances and sound quality are excellent but the works in the early discs aren't as good as those in the middle and later discs. Therefore it can get a bit monotonous especially if you're listening to it straight through. I've been taking breaks whenever I can and then returning to it. I still haven't got through the whole set yet.
Definitely get that one, or the CPE Bach Edition also by Hänssler, which includes all of that and more.
I was lucky to find this set for a song this weekend. Enjoying it now: Mozart: 6 Quartets Dedicated to Haydn. Alexander String Quartet, Foghorn Classics. One downside: the last track on each disc is the sound of a foghorn...
I have enjoyed this box set so much over the past couple of years. I have enormous respect for Ms. Markovina not only for her artistry but for her dedication in bringing all of this great music to us.
Richard Strauss Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme New York Chamber Symphony Gerard Scharz, conductor disc 14 Gerard Scharz Collection 30 discs Naxos, 2017 This is as delightful a performance of Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme as I have heard.
That is an amazing box set. Somewhat perplexing that none of his recordings of Peter Mennin are included but they can be had separately.
I agree, the Gerard Schwarz box should have been larger. I am going to have to track down several additional recordings.
