The most obvious one to me is Jethro Tull's Living in the Past. Because back in 1973, we in the States considered it a separate album and not a compilation, because many of the songs were from EPs not released in the States and it also contained previously unreleased live material.

I'd argue that the inclusion of a live track on this otherwise all studio recorded album (which also happens to be a cover song - the only cover song on the album) very much makes it NOT seem like a proper album. If they'd left that track out, it would have felt a lot like a proper (non-compilation) album.

"The Mix" isn't a compilation. It's new studio recordings of old songs.

It is their biggest singles reinterpreted here with the string quartet from the Irish Chamber Orchestra, along w/3 additional new tracks.

The correct answer is "Weird Scenes..."

I spun this for years instead of the albums proper. Finally wore it out, ditched all my vinyl afterwards, and now happily reverted back to the original albums via 24/96 files.

Nick Lowe's The Wilderness Years, a compilation of singles, b-sides, outtakes, and other oddities... It's been rendered somewhat redundant by the generous bonus tracks on recent reissues of his catalog, but it's a fantastic, fun listen, and I think some of the tracks have still not been reissued.

I would argue Post-Mersh Volumes 1-3 are probably equally good, if not better, examples. (I actually considered posting them in this thread.)

Very nicely done. :righton: I was aware of reasons why on Cocteau Twins & Suede (as I'd also included reason w/my post of The Cranberries.) I don't see others doing so. In all fairness to them, OP didn't set that example w/their opening post or in instructions. - I knew their reason for The Masterplan b/c I am familar w/Oasis. -
It is thoughtful, as it's not so reasonable to expect every member to be well acquainted w/every artist in history & their comps to understand why they've been posted.

MBB&B - no as too much of it is not unique to it.

Odds & Sods - definitely yes as only one song was previously released - though it was long OOP at the time O&S was released (plus the tracks had further work done prior to release such as studio overdubs and new mixes to help unify the sound of the album). However it would have worked far better with a different sequencing. If they put all the oldest songs on one side and all the newest songs on the other side rather than mixing them up (seemingly at random) it would have worked far better. It could have been like having one side essentially be like 1971/72 "side 3 of Who's Next" and the other side be a collection of half 1968 pre and half 1970 post Tommy material. Not that all the tracks would need to be presented in *exact* chronological order, just sequence it so that each of the two sides make the most aesthetic/stylistic sense from beginning to end rather than the "jumping around" sequencing of the album as released.

Yello released 1980–1985 The New Mix in One Go in 1986 with songs from their first four albums presented as a continuous seamless mix. I actually listen to it mor often than their original albums.
