Basically any new version of a bonafide classic with "the artist now Ft whatever other younger artist (usually rapper or pop)"

I remember when I first heard Madonna's "American Pie". I started laughing out loud.

Let's not. In fact let's pretend it doesn't exist. Trust me... the world is better off.

I'm with you on this one. Jeff Buckley's is incredibly, achingly beautiful. I've recently listened to Rufus Wainwright's version again and although I like it, it's not the same song in his hands. But I guess that is the point with covers. The goal is to reveal something new in a song. Or just play it really pretty.

Hearing the song on Shrek must have allowed people to disengage from the lyrics of it. For a time there were any number of artists covering it. The most ridiculous version I heard was a live rendition by a gospel or gospel type choir. They de-emphasised all of the verses to get to the chorus which they belted over and over again into the ground! It was horrific to listen to. They completely misinterpreted the meaning of the song, never mind the nuance of it.

At one point during it's peak amount of covering, Leonard Cohen commented that there should be a moratorium on the song. I can only imagine that it came from a very personal moment in his romantic life and to hear the song bashed out of shape so badly it must have hurt.

I wasn't even aware of this, Googled it just now, and listened to 'Demolition Man' and 'Desert Rose'. I see he's also going to re-do 'Every Breath You Take'.

    Good God.

The guitar riffs are what make the song.

Naked Eyes covered Always Something There to Remind Me and managed to improve on the '60s original.

Such things are few and far between however.

Yeah, because it's a mess, unlike the original.

It wasn't totally awful but completely unnecessary IMHO ...

Yes! Curses for making me listen to it again!! That fade-out faux gospel-y chorus was painful. And I actually like Paul Young back in the day (Every Time You Go Away)...

An entire album of covers, most of them as good if not better than the originals. I think Bowie pulled it off because he just didn’t copy or enhance the originals, he (mostly) totally transformed them into something else.

  21. If your a big fan of Limp Bizkit, you might like this if not, regardless of how you feel about George Michael he could sing the **** out of even the phone booth and “Faith” is all about George Michael.

The Smithereens liked to do covers and even recreated "Meet the Beatles".
Pat does a nice job for really having too low of a voice for the material they did.

It's good but I'd of rather gotten new Smithereens material. I do like their cover of "The Seeker" by the Who.
