Some of my personal favourites include: Otis Redding - Day Tripper Stevie Wonder - We Can Work It Out Tangerine Dream - Tomorrow Never Knows John Farnham - Help! For oddness, I also like hearing Freddie Mercury sing Rain with Ibex, and Bing Crosby singing Hey Jude.
what a splendid display of music geekery. You should probably keep this rolling and publish the list with links on some website or send it to some major publication. Even turn it into a book.
Good idea. If anyone ever wants to start one, I am more than happy for them to take my list as a starting point.
If anyone has any suggestions as to where to send it to, I would be very grateful. I am pleased that you are all enjoying it; that makes the many hours spent compiling it more than worthwhile. I think that it would be great as an app, which could then keep on updating itself.
You can add Ayreon's cover of When I'm Sixty-Four to the list. You can listen to it here: http://zvonko.net/when-i-m-sixty-four -- just scroll down to the bottom or search for "Ayreon" (without the quotes) and click the blue play-button. It appears on their 'Come Back to Me' EP.
I mean you KNOW there are a lot of covers out there, but even so... Personally, it's given me a basis on which to seek them out. I know it won't always be pretty, but there are so many I'm already dying to hear...
Just noticed the Carpenters' version of Help! isn't on the list... I'm not nitpicking, but I always liked that one. Oh God, there was that Comic Relief version too. Bananarama with French & Saunders. Poor old Help!
As long as everyone posts the missing covers on this thread, then we will at least have an easily accessible way of finding them. (Edit) I have just seen your reply, but the point above still counts.
I just thought that I should say; if anyone here doesn't know about holding down the 'command' and 'f' buttons, then you should certainly try it. It makes searching the list so much easier.
An artist can be 'overrated' in more than one respect. All this list shows is that the Beatles were hugely influential, which everyone who claims that the Beatles were overrated would probably assent to anyway. It does not follow from their being influential that they were as good as they are given credit for, or that their being as influential as they were is justified -- that's a point that would still need to be argued through separate appeal. (Don't shoot the messenger.)
Now, this is cheating as she never officially recorded it but... This is Olivia's take on Honey Pie from 1974. She used to do the song in concert in the States around this time. She gets a bit carried away in the middle, but it's a nice version. Sorry for breaking the rules momentarily!
I suppose that what it does do is show that you are in the minority if you consider them to be overrated. There is also a good chance that someone's favourite acts have covered them, even if they themselves don't like the Beatles.
You are not breaking the rules, and thanks very much for posting. I like this country style take on the song. This will be added to the list.
A few more........mostly Elvis Costello - live versions only, but you already have some listed. All I've Got To Do - same 2007 tour as Hey Bulldog And Your Bird Can Sing - 2011 Spinning Wheel shows Girl - 2011 & 2012 Spinning Wheel shows Please Please Me - 2012 Spinning Wheel shows For No One - Sophie Von Otter/Elvis Costello - For The Stars album. Not Elvis Costello: You Won't See Me - The Godz - Godz 2 album. NYC garage band that sounds close to The Shaggs
Thanks! I didn't realise that he had covered them so often. I will give the Godz version of You Won't See Me a listen.
