Brilliant suggestion. I really appreciate all of these suggestions. I will eventually update the list and include them all. The more suggestions for the lesser covered songs, the merrier.
No wonder you've been so quiet here lately. But kinda lazy, just tackling the group stuff, don't ya think? Where's the definitive list of all the solo covers? A great b-side, which surprisingly doesn't appear to be on youtube, is World Party doing "Penny Lane". The same cd single has covers of Dylan's "sweetheart like you", and JL's #9 Dream... EDIT: a look at their boxset shows they also released Dear Prudence, Cry Baby Cry & Fixing A Hole.
What an incredible job you have done. In this day where most people Google, Wiki, and Facebook their needs, you actually spent time to research and create yourself. Does this mean every Beatle song has bee covered? I now have to look into the Revolution No. 9 covers----intrigued.
Thanks! It depends on how you define what is a Beatles song. Every A-Side, B-Side and studio album track has been covered, as have the new singles from the Anthologies, the 'new' song on Live At the BBC Volume 1 and the two demos on the Beatles Bootleg Recordings album.
Another one I couldn't find on YouTube (I'm on the iPad) is from 1976. The Surprise Sisters take on Got To Get You Into My Life. Believe it or not, it was an actual single release! Alas, not one that bothered the charts at all. Very cabaret version. Worth a gander if you can find the Top Of The Pops clip that features the girls. Nice for those of you who miss Prisoner Cell Block H!
Thanks for these Yorick, Mr. Jinks and Bobby Morrow. Keep them coming. Here is the list to add to the big list, so far: Bob Dylan : Something Michael Hedges : Tomorrow Never Knows Daniel Ash : Day Tripper The Fabulous Conti Family : Hey Jude San Volt : Hello Goodbye The Clefs Of Lavender Hill : It Won't Be Long Wayne Brady : Can't Buy Me Love Ayreon : When I'm 64 Olivia Newton-John : Honey Pie The Sunshine Company : I Need You Elvis Costello: All I've Got To Do, And Your Bird Can Sing, Girl, Please Please Me, Elvis Costello and Sophie Von Otter: For No One The Godz : You Won't See Me Reba McEntire : If I Fell Spanky and Our Gand : And Your Bird Can Sing Lorrie Morgan : Eight Days A Week Roger Nichols and the Small Circle Of Friends : I'll Be Back World Party: Penny Lane, Dear Prudence, Cry Baby Cry, Fixing A Hole The Surprise Sisters : Got To Get You Into My Life
A list of cover songs that is large, does not change how they are "Rated". Most agree (along with me of course as a beatles fan) they were a great musical group. The over-rated part, comes from a small (and extremely vocal) minority of their fandom, totally overstating everything they did, asserting all kinda of innovations to them that are not always factually based, and basically an over zealous fandom for a musical act that is based on their own personal feelings and thinking that all that do not feel the same "Love", are hating the group, or trying to disprove their importance in musical history or something. Not everyone frankly loves them the way, this vocal majority does. I assert, the most unique thing about the beatles, were their fans.
Have to say - pretty clever lyrics in that the pronouns of "she" and "her" do not have to be changed regardless of the gender singing or gender of the object of affection.
I get what you are saying, but let's please not turn this into an argument about whether they are overrated or not. I am not saying that you would, but it might turn into one. What the list does show is how many diverse musical acts covered them. I wonder if any other group or songwriter has been covered this often by such a wide amount of people?
The above two songs (And Your Bird...and Birthday) were both done by Paul Weller, the former with the Jam.
It's a nice cover. Reba is a singer with a powerful voice that she never overuses. She could help out a lot of today's acts by giving them tips.
I am guessing no. It pays to be popular!! Frankly I get your point, I think many artists or managers that decide an act will do a cover, have to base it on the "Cover" being of a well known song, for obvious reasons. Lesser known groups, usually do not have covers done of their songs.
Wow. Thanks for doing that. I had often wondered what the list would look like. It is bigger than I thought it would be.
