The Concert is a terrible document of this band live.... you'd be well served to seek out the absolutely stunning and vibrant Live at Woodstock album that they released this summer. Suzie Q is absolutely stonking and even though ten minutes long, it flies by!
The Concert is better than Live In Europe in my opinion and is the 4 piece band instead of 3. The biggest drawback with the Woodstock release is that 4 of the 11 tracks are cover tunes. I would rather have some more originals. Lodi for example was played quite a bit during the 1969 shows but apparently omitted from the Woodstock set list. However, the performance is energetic.
I hear and understand your issues with the concerts... but the performance on Woodstock is so m uch better than the one on Concert (let alone Live in Europe) that it counts... I'm the same way with The Beatles... I stick to my Star Club material and some bootlegs of earlier shows, rather than the "official" stuff... even though there's better songs later, it's the performance.
I got this 3 CD set because the sound on the two chronicle discs is a bit rough. This one sounds better IMO.
Yes - get the first six albums. However, don't discard the compilations, as they are such a great listening experience.
This thread is making me very impatient with the Canadian post, as my AP SACD of Cosmo's Factory should have been here by now. And that would complete my collection - bar The Concert, but that wasn't an AP SACD, just a Fantasy one. But, matching packaging and all. How does George Horn's mastering stack up to Hoffman and Gray?
Another vote for the AP SACDs; these sound REALLY good. Better sounding than any original vinyl pressing and even rivaling the DCCs. I did an A/B comparison of Pendulum; AP SACD vs DCC cd; nearly identical to my ears.
CCR did not. But Fogerty has done it solowise on one or two tours, although in a much-shortened version.
I agree with you regarding their live performance on Live at Woodstock, but the actual recording is pretty naff! JG
