Written by Jeff Lynne in 1971, the song was originally recorded with Roy Wood and The Move. Lynne later rerecorded the song for the 1976 album "A New World Record".

For me, the better version is obvious, curious what your opinions are!

    The Move (1972)

    Love Move/ELO.

Nevertheless Do Ya sounds like an early Kinks rip-off.

Move version. They sound pretty similar (unsurprisingly), the ELO version sounds a bit rushed, or the vocals do, the strings add nothing.

Extremely close call for me. I enjoy the new additions from the ELO version, the strings and the extra line in the second verse... But I love the raunchiness of the Move original as well... Went with that. Though it's very much a 51/49 decision for me.

Or Todd Rundgren/Utopia or Ace Frehley?

    Nothing beats cowbell.

I wasn't aware of the Move version, but it also reveals where glam bands like The Sweet got their inspiration for the layers of ascending backing vocals.

That's true. The Move were pretty much ahead of the times in some of their choices. Had Wild Tiger Woman been a single in 1972 rather than 1968 it probably would have been a big smash.

I like both and A New World Record is my favorite ELO album but The Move.

I had never heard the Move version before. It is very good.
I think, oddly for me, in this instance the ELO versions smoothness works better.

Like The Move version as well but 1976 Do Ya does it for me. New World Record is an awesome album..

The Move version is like a garage rock anthem. The ELO version is much slicker, and it becomes a pop rock symphony, but it works. I like both but I give the slight edge to ELO.

The Move's by a (message from the) country mile...

  15. Love both, but the raucousness nature of the song and riff of the song deserves The Move treatment. Has ELO ever rocked as hard as this? When I first heard this, I finally got why Cheap Trick were so influenced by The Move.

    Tough call, but The Move.

Both good, but I go with ELO because of the extra drum roll part, which adds to the energy of the song.

A good bit of thrashing going on here if one looks past the synths and strings.

Was not aware of the Move's version.
Love the raw sound of it.
But, the tighter vocals on the ELO version nudge it just over the top for me.

Agree 100%. Had the 45 when it first came out and those opening chords still slay me.
