I like Dewa Budjana, excellent guitarist/composer. I'm also big on Voice of Baceprot(VOB), all female metal band. Check YouTube folks, lots of great clips of them.
Budjana is an excellent musician and he's a good guy. I like watching his YouTube channel where he usually has a conversation with fellow Indonesian guitarists. And there's one more thing, he's a friend of John Frusciante! Here is their collaboration track: I don't like Voice of Baceprot, though.
I've heard Indonesian 'Traditional' music in Indonesia ... but I have no idea who or what band I was listening to.
These guys are real players. There is a lot of interesting music to be found in your country, with a little searching. You might try Bandcamp... Bandcamp Just search "Indonesia", or a specific island of your choice. You might try the Cuneiform record label which has a big catalog there. Bandcamp is mostly indie artists, every genre imaginable, lots of global music selections. And lots of samples available. .
I've never listened to Indonesian music. But Tom Waits has made the word "Indonesia" sound downright evil. At about 2:15....
It was a very long time ago - a Jakarta backstreet neighborhood. Been there twice. Also heard Bali 'traditional' - in Bali. Just more local way-back-'deep' backstreet joints. Found a 'very cool' Bali 'Traditional' VG+ LP in the Goodwill! A 'prize possession' of mine now ~ remembrance of Bali & the Bali countryside. Makes me smile every time I even see the album cover... or think about it!! The album is really 'old-old' Bali music played with Traditional instruments of the period. Also been to Ujung Pandang for a one-nighter. A 'one-nighter' is better than not going at all. Had a 'fun evening' just hanging out backstreet and drinking some beers. Friendly folks!
Usually, I find it easier to get into sonics that I'm unfamiliar with, if there is some element in a recording that I know I will enjoy because of familiarity with it. So I usually explore "new" genres through works of artists/musicians/producers who are braching out into other styles/regional markets. On another music forum that has since closed down, I've read that producer Steve Lillywhite now lives and works in Indonesia. I'd be curious to find out about stuff he might have recorded there with local artists. That would be a cool way to get into the regional musical styles. Does anybody happen to know more about that?
By far my favourite Indonesian artists. Not sure what their status is in your country, but Andy Tielman is one of the greatest guitar players ever
I'm a big fan of Guruh Gipsy's self-titled album which is some great prog rock with gamalan elements. I really hope it gets reissued on vinyl. Also really like this one, hauntingly beautiful. As a sound designer for games, it inspires me a lot:
