    There's a holdup in the Bronx
    Brooklyn’s broken out in fights;
    There's a traffic jam in Harlem
    That's backed up to Jackson Heights;
    There's a Scout troop short a child,
    Khrushchev's due at Idlewild ...
    Car 54, Where Are You??

    I used to watch it on Nick At Nite in the 1980's and I have it on DVD. Great show!

    My favorite show ever. Watched it as a youngster on "Nick at Night". Was so pleased when the show got an official DVD release from the good people at Shanchie.

    We know what Fred Gwynne did after that series. But Joe E. Ross? Toody became Gronk in his follow-up TV sitcom, "It's About Time."

    I certainly remember Car 54 and It's About Time but I can't say I recall thinking they were very good. Perhaps I'll revisit them via the YouTube clips posted and change my mind. :)

    One of my all-time favorite shows! My favorite Officer Toody tagline: "Do you mind? DO YOU MIND?"

    One of two shows that my father cracked up to all the time. The other was Get Smart.

    Whether Toody or Gronk, his signature line was "Ooh, ooh!"

  19. It's nice to see "Aunt Edna" before Clark had to stuff her into the family truckster too.

    I think you're confusing Beatrice Pons with Imogene Coca. :)

  21. Could be. I've been confused before...At least I think I've been confused...Hmmm. Well anyway.
    If you look up, "It's About Time Cast" you will see Imogene Coca listed and she was the actress who played Aunt Edna.

    Car 54 was written and created by Nat Hiken, the greatest comic genius television every produced (he also did Sgt Bilko). Its About Time was written and created by the dunces who did Gilligan's Island, and is of similar quality.

    Joe E. Ross was a strip joint comedian that Hiken plucked from obscurity. Here's his act:

    Ross was lazy, stupid, and personally gross. They probably would have kept the show going, but nobody could stand working with him.

    Type in Car 54 on the youtube. Lots of episodes, maybe all of them, plus interviews with the cast done years later (all of them in awe of Hiken). Hiken died in his 50s in the late 1960s.

    I can't watch the video now, but is that the one with the parrot? That was hilarious!
    Another Nick-at-Nite viewer here. I'd watched a few episodes and kind of liked it, but when I saw that episode, I knew I had to watch them all. Very consistent show.

    Ah! My mistake, I thought you were talking about "Car 54" not "It's About Time"!
    Though I can see how somebody might mix up Coca and Pons, there is a vague similarity.

    Yes, the one with the parrot. I just now watched it for the umpteenth time. Still funny!
