DCC Archive Does anyone want to trade home remasters?

I have been working on tons of remasters over the last year or so at home. I have found, for example, that the mint Japanese pressing of All Things Must Pass I used for a source, then fed into Cool Edit and worked on, sounds far better (at least to my ears, and the few people who have heard it) than the remastered CD released by Apple/Capitol last year. I just finished the first Boston album from the Mobile Fidelity vinyl last night.

I assume some of the readers of this board do the same kind of thing. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in trading their works on cd-r. Let me know here or email me at [email protected]

I have done the following:

Jefferson Airplane Surrealistic Pillow Mono & Stereo Mixes from vinyl
Van Halen First Album
Beatles MFSL pressings
Led Zeppelin first 7 albums from Classic Records pressings
Stones MFSL pressings (I have not completed all of the albums yet)
George Harrison All Things Must Pass from Japanese vinyl
Boston MFSL pressing

There are more, but I am at work and can't remember all of them. They are all from vinyl and worked on in Cool Edit. All of them have a definate improvement from the regular CD releases, IMHO. If you give me your email address, I can put together a complete list and send it to you. I am just looking for other people's "improvements" in classic rock type albums. I always enjoy listening to versions with sound quality improvements, especially those done at home, since it amazes me what can be done better at home than the record companies do. In addition, we do it in less time and for less cost!

Hey, I've been doing this for about four years. But, I just do LPs that have not appeared on CD yet. I also use Cool Edit Pro.

My main two claims of fame are "Buckingham/Nicks" and Eric Carmen's
"Boats Against The Current". Absolutley NO compression, limiting, EQ, or any means to maximize levels were used.

I'll second Grant's recommendation of his fine work on BUCKINGHAM NICKS. A fabulous sounding CD-R!

 

Just for fun, the other day I loaded up Buckingham/Nicks into the PC and maximized the levels about 4db to see how it would sound. I got it up to comercial loudness standards and it still sounds good but the miximized version is not fun to listen to. In fact, it's fatiging to the ears.

Just more proof that if the major releases would just back off the obsession with making everything loud they could probably sell more music.

This brings me to my little rant on the new Elton John CD. It's grossly over compressed. What's the point? Why does his voice have to be louder than the already too loud piano? It sounds like he's trying to swallow the mic. (heh!)

They do that kind of thing so that it still sounds the way they want after it goes through the layers of multi-band compression and composite clipping, etc. before it gets to your car radio from the station you are listening to-- never mind that it makes the CD's sound awful at home when you are not listening to the radio...

 

I know that, Dough, but it doesn't even sound good on the radio. Radio wasn't that bad when we were young, and they were playing compressed vinyl.

 

I have a clean extra copy of Rock The First Vol. 1 that I'd like to trade.
