totally agree it’s more EDM than anything else. but. some of us (not all of us) find more melodies, lyrical content and other duran duran DNA in the mix than others. the title track is one of my favorite duran duran things. cause it’s weird and they took a bold step after the safe “return to rio” sounds of “all you need is now.” and honestly, i just think “paper gods” as its own track/song is just too good.
the fact that they were stickers. easily peeled off and let go. even in the youtube clips. only speaks to the idea of trashy paper gods/icons that are easily discarded. even more. duran was suggesting that fans discard these paper gods in the same ways that they suggested the masses trash other paper gods.
206. Face For Today "Face for Today" is a song by Duran Duran, released on the album Paper Gods by Warner Bros. Records on 11 September 2015. It was produced by the band and co-written with Dom Brown. The brooding track contains a sweeping instrumental breakdown and a chorus reminiscent of the Seven and the Ragged Tiger era.
just watched the “face for today” clip and saw so many of those icons. (and as a fan since 1982, i recognize them and have whatever kind of misplaced affection for them all). wrinkled. warped. removed and torn apart. i can’t speak for the band or any graphic artist involved but i think they meant for everyone to treat those iconic images like. trash. nonsense. paper tigers. paper gods.
Face for Today. 4/5. One of the many tracks that makes this album special. New Duran = Old Duran. Fresh spin on their sound. Updated with class.
Face For Today : This is the most Duran-track on the album for me. Great vibe. I just wish the instrumental break, which to me is the highlight of the track, would last a little longer. 4,5/5
I was a year old when Duran Duran's first album came out. As a complete record, All You Need is Now is a top 3 album - possibly their best - alongside the first two. This threat however has leaned me towards Seven!
You Kill Me With Science The first time I heard it is I thought it s*cked. Definitely a grower. Like the last ''guitar'' synth Elka Synthex part and the lyric part ''A lad insane'', clever reference to Bowie. At least it has real JT bass! Don't like the digital choir synths, too fake. 4/5 Face For Today Classic Duran Duran! I remember Roger saying this song sounded more organic in the beginning, probably with real drums. But this doesn't degrade the great songwriting and the amazing instrumental part. 5/5
Face For Today: would have loved to heard the more organic version of this song. That said, the bridge and chorus are phenomenal. Plus John's bass sounds perfectly integrated into this mostly electronic track. It is pure pop but still one of my favorite songs from the album. I also think this would have made a decent single and might have connected more with a younger audience than Last Night In The City. 4/5
gotta say. still enjoying the duran debates but hating that this thread is gonna come to a close soon!! maybe keep it open for the 2020 duran duran releases??
Absolutely. As soon as new songs and a new album hit (they are saying Spring/Summer), there will lots more to discuss. An album featuring Erol Alkan, Mark Ronson, Giorgio Moroder, Graham Coxon, Lykke Li? Plus God knows who else (Kevin Parker?!) And 40 special events for the 40th? This thread will be alive and well in 2020.
207. Danceophobia "Danceophobia" is a song by Duran Duran, released on the album Paper Gods by Warner Bros. Records on 11 September 2015. The song was co-written by the band with Mr. Hudson and Dom Brown. The disco-flavored track features a spoken-word bridge by Lindsay Lohan, which Nick Rhodes has said was inspired by Vincent Price's part in the song "Thriller". Lohan plays a doctor treating a patient suffering from dance-phobia.
Face For Today: Eery echoes of 1983-5 but then again: What's another echo on an album full of echoes? And this is a good echo, sounding vintage and contemporary. Which is something I didn't realise when I first browsed "Paper Gods" years ago. It's actually a worthwhile entry in their discography, really love the production: "Yeaaaaaaah!" 4/5
Danceophobia: ... and instantly back to weird. I don't know if it's just me or if this does sound like the Electric Light Orchestra circa 1979. Or MGMT around 2008? But then again: One could make a whole compilation of tracks like that from various DD albums starting as early as.... I guess some people would bring up "Seven And The Ragged Tiger" now! It's not bad. 3,5 / 5
Danceophobia: Let me just get in here before everyone slates it. I think this is a right laugh. It sounds like the sort of thing you would have heard on a 80s teen movie soundtrack by a band that you'd never hear a peep from again. I think it's great, dumb fun and Lohan's throaty, camp voice-over is brilliant. 4/5.
Face For Today - I quite like this. It’s poppy but has a nice groove. 4/5 Dancephobia - No words. 0/5
Danceophobia Nice as a joke for a bonus track, but to leave tracks like Northern Lights with amazing John Frusciante guitar and Cinderella Ride off the album for this, is a disgrace. The fact that they had like 70 versions of this song confirms that you cannot polish a turd. Also the comparison of Lindsay Lohan's contribution to the song with the spoken words part in MJ's Thriller is ridiculous, her contribution is nothing special. Always skip this one. 1/5
Thanks to this thread I've had this playing on repeat in my head all foking day! I'd probably even give it 4/5 because it's deliberately daft. And probably second from a trilogy in the making! (Before you ask: "Girl Panic" being the first installment ) 2nd, 3rd and 4th thought: I don't think this is dafter than the retro flirtations of acts like Scissor Sisters or MGMT. If this wasn't Duran it could have even been a hit.
Danceophobia: oooof! More camp than a row of tents. And maybe the campiness was intentional, but it simply comes off as the audio equivalent of an old man squeezing into hipster skinny jeans. I also agree that there is no excuse for this song making the final album tracklist over gems like Valentine Stones (no pun), Northern Lights and Cinderella Ride. Ghastly. For all the grief that Red Carpet Massacre took from the fans for being too trendy , there is nothing as bad as Danceophobia on that album. 1/5
Granted, I wouldn't want an entire album of "Last Night In The City" but it helps make up for something I heard on the last album that I didn't like. This song hits where "All You Need Is Now" misses. "The way we did when we were younger, when we told everybody, all you need is now." If I want to feel or remember what it was like when I was younger, I'll play a song from that time. A newer song that's trying to encourage me to do that isn't going to work for me. "We're gonna live this night, live it like it's our last night, cause nobody cares, if there's no tomorrow." This is what I want and expect from the band I saw standing on a rooftop at night on the inner sleeve of Rio. I wasn't able to live the kind of life I imagined they did, and possibly still do to some extent. So it becomes a fantasy. If and when they go out on the town, I don't know exactly what kind of clubs or dances they'd go to, but I doubt it's "Retro Night" and where they do go you'd hear songs like "Last Night In The City." The looking back over your shoulder aspect of All You Need Is Now is something that I'm glad only lasted for one album. Paper Gods moves them forward.
