Some folks like it, some not. The original mastering is brighter and some of that is tamed on the SHM. I like it it just sounds...different.
Thanks Wayne. I have the GH2 SHM. Does Bitch Is Back sound the same on Caribou SHM? I know it's shorter on GH2.
I haven’t listened to it in a little while 0n GH2 but, as I recall, it’s a tiny bit brighter. I will take a listen to it tomorrow and compare. It sounded to me like it might have been a higher gen tape as well from what I recall. Don’t quote me on it yet though as it’s been a couple of months since I listened to that version. I’m mot sure how reliable my memory will be 0n it. i definitely preferred the Caribou version but as to specifics, I need to listen again.
These are great for people who previously had no digital Elton, get great sounding discs in one fell swoop. Some of the older quality releases are very pricey now days. I bought them all, no regrets and have started selling some of my other versions as I will no longer play them.
In my opinion, "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" sounds better on the GH DCC, the SHM is unsurprisingly missing the hoffman magic. But the Caribou SHM isn't bad at all and can say it made me appreciate the album more. The rocket remaster was unlistenable.
I’m sorry to say this was the case for me with Blue Moves, which I bought first along with Caribou, the latter of which I did notice is more spacious and defined. I just got DSMIOTPP so I’m hoping that will be an improvement on my original MCA. As a long-time EJ fan I truly wish I was more blown away by these remasters (I read all the raves with jealousy).
What do you think of the Caribou SHM? I think the SHM for Don't Shoot Me is an improvement over the old MCA, but not a huge one. I forget the specific differences, but I like the SHM more. I agree about not being blown away and wishing you were. I the ones that I enjoy, I really like, but I wouldn't say I love them. The SHM SACD for S/T is one that I love, though.
Well, I just ordered Caribou SHM CD from amazon. Should arrive Wednesday. The only three I don't have now are: 1. Greatest Hits Vol 1 - No unique tracks, here, right? 2. Empty Sky - This is compressed, right? 3. Rock of the Westies - I have the AF and I am very happy with it.
Sounds like you're set! Yeah to me the AF of Rock of the Westies is better than the SHM, no need to upgrade.
The SHM Empty Sky is raucous, like it but have to be in the mood. The original DJM is a smoother listen.
Just double checked and mine is the German Empty Sky CD and not the U.K. This one is gloss sounding whilst the SHM is Matt but very revealing and still a good listen.
Elderberry Wine, Midnight Creeper and Crocodile Rock are really disappointing on the SHM-CD Don't Shoot Me. Really bright and hissy.
As I have written before, the DJM CD sounds more pleasant, but everybody seems to prefer the bright SHM CD so far.
Well, I like the sound on the other tracks. I guess this is what can happen when you just release untouched flat transfers.
BTW here is my own list of preferred versions after spending a week comparing the SHM's to my previous favorites... Elton John = 2011 SHM-SACD Tumbleweed Connection = MFSL Madman Across the Water = 2018 SHM-CD Honky Château = MFSL Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player = WG DJM Goodbye Yellow Brick Road = MFSL Caribou = 2018 SHM-CD Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy = 2018 SHM-CD Rock of the Westies = AF Blue Moves = 2018 SHM-CD I don't own or have heard the US MCA discs.
