Thanks. I see now that the photo of the booklet was posted on a previous page - sorry about the redundancy! I may give this disc a listen today. I'm curious and have absolutely no idea what to expect music-wise (I don't recognize any of the song titles and don't think I even know any Golden Earring outside of 'Radar Love'). Will report back if I do.
Update: I did listen, and I was mistaken about only knowing 'Radar Love' by GE. I had completely forgotten about their '80s hit 'Twilight Zone' but immediately was reminded as I heard this album. I guess it came out a couple years later, and it sounds like they're trying to recreate the magic 'hit' formula of that one. Very quintessential '80s pop/rock sound - sounded to me like an INXS / Duran Duran hybrid. Not bad but nothing remarkable IMO. The mastering is good - typical well balanced, punchy, and dynamic Diament sound (though probably from an LP copy I'm guessing). Honestly, I can't imagine I'll revisit this one too much, but it's worth a listen if you find it cheap somewhere.
There was a discussion on this but it's locked now. Posts get buried quite easily here **shrug** Yeah, I saw it. The US and Canadian release is at least explicitly a Diament, but from a previous thread on it, people weren't sure which of the three known masters was his
Bad Company--Fame and Fortune 1986 Atlantic , 7 81684-2 SRC G1, Matrix: 81684-2 SRC-01 075678168420 EAC: 86.4 / 93.5 / 95.0 / 87.2 / 85.4 / 85.8 / 85.3 / 91.2 / 81.9 / 98.0 I picked up the above CD while looking through the bins recently. Barry Diament is listed in booklet credits as the mastering engineer. I do not see the CD on the list. I would NOT consider the CD an "essential" purchase for a Diament mastering, yet all track are dynamic and w/o clipping. IMO, the sound quality is good, the content not so much. Fame and Fortune was not a popular album. I did a Google forum search and found one reference by John Cantrell in the thread welcoming Barry Diament to the Hoffman Forum (Welcome Ex-Atlantic mastering engineer Barry Diament to the SH Forums ).
Jackson Browne--Lawyers in Love (WG for US) Asylum 9 60268-2 PolyGram Matrix: 2893 240 01 Asylum purple target on light blue Label: MADE IN [] WEST GERMANY (radial at 6 o'clock) Mastering Credit: WCI Record Group Barcode: 075596026826 EAC: 80.3 / 77.6 / 89.9 / 76.7 / 91.6 / 79.1 / 79.1 / 88.0 While already on the list, I struggled with tagging this CD as a Barry Diament uncredited mastering and switched the credit today. I reviewed the Essential Barry Diament masterings threads Part 1 & 2. Barry Diament initially referenced the CD here: Essential Barry Diament masterings For a while it was listed, as Diament mastered "Lives in the Balance" or "Lawyers in Love". In the initial reference Diament mentions "I received a phone call a day or two later saying Jackson was at the Mastering Lab and they wanted me to call to tell them what I did" and "So, if the mastering credit lists that other place (if there is a CD mastering credit separate from a general one), chances are I did not master the CD" Discogs lists a multitude of pressings, most with the "Mastered By – Doug Sax, Mike Reese" credit. pig whisperer adds the CD "And add Jackson Browne's "Lawyers In Love" (32XD)" to the list here (post #837): Essential Barry Diament masterings (he originally maintained the list). While the matrix of the Asylum Records – 32XD-490 CD is listed on Discogs as: 32XD-490 11 +++++, the earliest West German pressing matrix is 7559 60268-2 2893 240 01. The target version of Lawyers in Love, IMO, is a nice sounding CD with all tracks being dynamic and w/o clipping. It sounds similar to the Lives in the Balance CD mastering. It appears that odds are good that Diament mastered both CD and Doug Sax the vinyl.
Regarding Howard Jones and Barry Diament. Dream Into Action WEA, WG Target, PolyGram 240 632-2; 9 60390-2 is likely mastered by Diament (IMO). All tracks are dynamic and w/o clipping. See various Target CD sites for images. EAC: 81.2 / 81.2 / 81.2 / 65.7 / 81.2 / 81.2 / 79.4 / 81.2 / 72.5 / 79.4 / 78.7 / 79.4 / 79.4 / 81.2 Dream Into Action and One to One albums previously discussed here: Howard Jones "Dream into Action" Target CD...Must Have Been a Poor Seller! The One to One album is a puzzler regarding Diament mastering. I own the following pressing: Howard Jones--One to One Elektra - 9 60499-2 JP for US Warner by JVC; Warner red rings Matrix (JVC stamped Ariel font): 60499-2-U1C 14 Label: MANUFACTURED BY VICTOR COMPANY OF JAPAN LTD. I wonder if this pressing is a level shift from another mastering of the CD? Does anyone else own a version with a different mastering and EAC?
The US SRC manufacture carries a non clip mastering as well. (Dream Into Action) Looks like a level shift. Possible WCI Group just bumped up Barry's. 95.5/95.5/95.5/77.2/95.5/95.5/93.3/95.5/85.2/93.3/92.5/93.3/93.3/95.5 WG Target/Japan Target,US PDO all carry the same peaks =81.2 etc..
I saw on the older above quoted thread that you own a copy of One to One. Is it the same as mine with same EAC levels?
It was in relation to Larry's Dream Into Action. I've only ever had the cassette for One To One (that I remember, I had a bunch of CD's ripped off in the mid 90's) and more recently @jeffmo789 gifted me the LP Since this was mixed at Atlantic Studio's, probably makes sense Barry's is used on all of them-He does hit 100 on occasion Here's a US- Album details - Dynamic Range Database
Thanks... now that I reviewed the thread, I see the HF member Larry B owned the CD and posted EAC values. Speed reading fail... again...
Can someone please help. Which U2 BOY did Mr. Diament do? Can you please post the identifying Discog numbers. Thanks!
Barry confirmed the old digi, looks like the 'yellow' This mastering can be found on the newer US 90's IFPI and the West German for US PDO Silver #01 (jewel case) as well.
How is Dream Into Action an "Essential" mastering? Yeah it's dynamic but seemingly very high-gen tape sourced, absence of transients, muddy/murky, congested. It's sound gives 80's CD a bad name. It's one of those masterings that many use stereo-typically to disparage old pre-remastered CD's. I ask again how is Dream Into Action an "Essential" mastering ?
It's not. But's it's the best we have on the format. The old UK and US LP's even though they carry different track lists, suffer as well. It's either a full digital or mixed (poorly done) -it flat lines. Like Cocteau Twins-Heaven or Las Vegas I think it was mixed to a maxell cassette.
Seems like we all have the same one (One to One)! I haven't seen any other EACs posted yet. I will start looking, too.
While perhaps it is not essential, I view the list, as it exists, as masterings by Diament. The list started in 2007 as Essential Barry Diament masterings, so 13 years of input and here we are--I am new to the comments/postings. As stated with Bad Company--Fame and Fortune... perhaps not essential, but a Diament mastering. I'm listening to Dream Into Action now and agree with your comments, it is nice to have all of Diaments work on one thread (IMO). I always appreciate comments on sound quality to better "tune" my ears and improve in my ability to describe what I hear.
Regarding Hiram Bullock--From All Sides CD is SRC G1 Matrix: 81685-2 SRC-01 EAC is 72.4 / 72.4 / 10.4 / 72.4 / 72.4 / 72.4 / 72.4 / 72.4 / 72.4 Barry Diament is credited in booklet. The wave forms do not look anything like Diament's work. Peaks are definitely clipped (note EAC values). I believe it may be miscredited to Diament. Does anyone else have any opinions? I'm not sure there is a definitive way to be sure.
Not sure, but those credits in booklets are frequently wrong. And clipped peaks sure don't sound like Barry's work, unless the tapes he was given were already like that.
Thanks for this. I can confirm there is at least one Australian-made CD which has this BD mastering. It's not on Discogs yet.
