I am sure The Beatles are the most covered band in history. Interesting question for you guys on the forum: Have you ever liked a Beatles cover version more than you liked the original version?

I only have one I can think of off the top of my head and that is the Elton John version of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds". I'm sure I'm in the minority, but that's honestly my choice.

No, but I have to say Jeff Beck's "A Day In the Life" comes pretty close---& that's saying a lot considering how much I love the original version.

Gorgeous cover, which features a certain Robert Smith from the Cure on guitar.

I think the version of "Hold Me Tight" from the "Across the Universe" film totally blows away the Beatles lousy version. And I love the Fabs.

  7. "Within You Without You" - Sonic Youth. Kills the original version.
"When I'm 64" - Courtney Pine. A peppy jazz take that, being instrumental, avoids the cloyingness of the original.
"Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" - William Shatner. Naturally. ;)

Have you ever liked a Beatles cover version BETTER than the original version?

After reading the thread title, I was all set to comment---but then I read responses here.

I guess I'm too old but I thought you meant: Beatles Cover Versions Better Than Original Version? In other words, the Beatles cover version of MATCHBOX better than Carl Perkins version and so on.

Guess you guys are talking about something else.

To me a Beatles cover version is a song THEY covered ("Roll Over Beethoven", "Devil In Her Heart", "Anna", "Honey Don't", "Chains", etc.) Call me stoopid but this thread would have been a lot more interesting.

  15. That's how I read the thread title too. I also think that thread's been done before, but I stand to be corrected.

Anyway, to detour down that road a spell: I'd say that their cover of "Twist and Shout" is way better than the original, "Money" at least as good if not better, and "Roll Over Beethoven" close but no cigar. Most of the others, I'm not familiar enough with the originals to comment.

Joe Cocker And The Grease Band - With A Little Help From My Friends and Peter Frampton's While My Guitar Gently Weeps very nearly beats the original, although i prefer the original !!
