    Running Bear
Whenever the Big Bopper is mentioned, he's usually passed off as a one-hit wonder for Chantilly Lace. Bopper's solo LP was great fun, but people forget he wrote great songs for other artists, such as this tear-jerking Native American teen love story. Johnny Preston was certainly no savage rock'n'roll rebel, but a lot of his suit-and-tie pop'n'roll is most entertaining and enjoyable.

Gene Vincent - Wildcat, My Heart
By this time without the roaring Blue Caps and with a more sophisticated backing, still cool as ever.

Max Bygraves - Fings ain't wot they used t'be
The only song I've heard that's written in the 50s that mentions Teds ("there's Teds wiv drainpipe trousers and Debs in coffee houses").

The Big Bopper and George "Possum" Jones were the backing singers on "Running Bear" - evidently, it was recorded prior to Bopper going down with Messrs. Valens and Holly in that plane in early '59.

But who else sees in Mr. Bygraves' song title, a possible influence on future Slade song title spellings come the '70's?

This should be a good and interesting thread. However, you have fallen into the same old historical revisionism that is not the way it was. There was no 'official' UK chart until Feb 1969. From 1952 till Feb 1969, there were 5 major independent charts: NME, Record Mirror, Melody Maker, Disc, and Record Retailer. Plus the BBC average of those charts, which was followed by a huge number of Brits, as featured weekly on both radio (starting the late 50s) and TV (starting 1964). None were 'official' until the BMRB chart in Feb 1969.

In 1977, the Guinness chart books began, they chose NME to represent the 50s, Record Retailer to represent the 60s. They did not claim these charts as 'official', they only listed which charts they were using 'for the purposes of this book.' They did not explain why they chose those charts. So why did they choose RR for the 60s? The authors were later quoted as saying "because it had a Top 50 chart every week 1960-69." So accuracy didn't matter, nor did the fact that Melody Maker was also a Top 50 chart for 5 years during the 60s, with a much larger sample base.

After 2001, the company that owned what was referred to as the industry chart, and would now be called 'the official charts', changed its name from the Chart Information Network (CIN) to "The Official UK Charts Company." They were thus not sanctioned as 'official' by anyone, they simply made it up, so as to better distinguish themselves against their competition, the MRIB chart, which had begun to move in on their territory. (No different than a fish n chips shop declaring themselves 'the official fish n chips shop of the UK.') They then (after 2001) chose RR as the 'official' UK chart of the 60s. Why? Because they claim it was an industry forerunner to the BMRB charts. Which was absolutely not true. RR began as the chart of 30 independent record retailer shops, not tied to the record companies, and not funded by them. You could say they were an anti-industry chart.

Record Retailer was the least accurate chart of the 60s, sampled the fewest number of record shops, disagreed the most often with the other charts, and was the least followed. Most Brits didn't even know they existed, as NME, Melody Maker, and the BBC were the best known. Melody Maker sampled the most record shops, 5 times as many as RR in 1960, 3 times as many in 1969; and were published in the most number of newspapers. To claim RR as 'official' for the 60s is a blatant lie. RR had the most #1 records that did not appear at #1 on ANY of the other charts. They also had the most number of 'not #1 records' that were #1 on ALL the other charts.

The 2 most blaring examples of the RR chart inaccuracies are these: The Beatles "Please Please Me" was #1 for 2 weeks on NME, MM, and Disc, and for 3 weeks on the BBC. It peaked at #2 on RR. 270 sampled record shops said it was #1; the 30 RR shops said it was #2. Which is truth?

Same thing for The Rolling Stones "19th Nervous Breakdown." #1 for 3 weeks on NME, MM, Disc, and the BBC, based on over 500 record shops. #2 on RR based on 80 record shops. Which is truth?

There are many other examples. Read this history of the UK charts here, and all will be revealed:

    Updated "CHART HISTORY"

If you want to do this thread right, you will mention every record that was #1 on any of the 5 major charts. You can find the article on Wiki:

List of UK charts and number-one singles (1952–1969) - Wikipedia

For everyone who lived thru the 60s in the UK, we know what was true chart history. For those that didn't, they have been brainwashed, they get their revised history from the self-proclaimed 'official' charts and the Guinness books that were anything but.

    Good luck! And have fun...

That's interesting, I never knew that. The Bopper also wrote a song for Jones, White Lightning.

You bring up several points. However, as on the '70's and '80's UK #1 threads I have cited additional NME #1's from what is "universally" accepted as "canonical" in the Official Charts' eyes, I do plan, in year-end reviews, to mention what "other" toppers there were not only there, but also Melody Maker and Disc. Record Mirror for sure had some "extra" #1's that were also NME toppers. The discrepancies are, as a researcher myself would realise, as much as the "canonical" US chart source Billboard (thanks to Joel Whitburn and American Top 40), vs. competitors such as Cash Box, Music Vendor (became Record World in 1964) and Radio & Records - the last three of which had a few "extra" #1's that missed reaching the top of Billboard's Hot 100.

But as to your examples of Beatles, Stones, etc., I am reminded of a certain punk rock number in 1977 that topped NME's charts - but which the BMRB altered their compilation methodology that week to keep it from reaching the top on their own chart. A shame there's no online record of which Melody Maker #1's there were after the 15 February 1969 creation of the BMRB. They held on with their own chart, too, until 1988 when they and NME both folded and started carrying charts from a rival to Gallup.

So here's what I'll do. With the new info on hand, I shall also be adding any "extra" #1's from Melody Maker I can crib together year-by-year. At least one MM #1 from 1970 did not top either NME's or BMRB's charts, for example.

  16. Being a Black Country lad, I can tell you that Slade's mis-spelling or kak grammar on their early singles was all down to their native accent.
They decided to spell how they speak or spake' in their region of the Midlands.

They must've gotten their cue to do that from that Bygraves song. What region/native accent would the spelling of his number have come from?

Meanwhile, await the avalanche of "extra" #1's from Melody Maker in each of the year-by-year threads of the 1970's - and also, when we finally get to the end of the '80's, all the "extra" #1's from MM in that decade. (I already did NME's.) Wonder, since pre-'60 NME / '60-'69 Record Retailer, '69-'82 BMRB, '83-? Gallup and so forth as considered "canonical" by the Official Charts, and thus I.T.O.P.H.O., considered equivalent to US Billboard, which of the "others" (post-'60 NME, Melody Maker, Record Mirror, Disc, etc.) would have been equivalent to the other US publications I brought up?

Excellent W.B.! I thank you, and history thanks you.

If you want more extra credit, you can throw in the Record Mirror and Disc #1's as well. They were good charts for their limited duration of the 60s, up to 1962 for RM, up to 1967 for Disc, and both sampled more record shops than RR. They each had a handful of #1's that didn't make any other chart, the Wiki spreadsheet will show you those.

I'd venture to add, you can throw in the Top Pops/Music Now chart as well, starting 1968 thru 1971. They reported on the record sales of the store chain WH Smith & Sons, a major player. Don't know off the top of my head if they had any #1's that didn't show up as such on the other charts. My link above will list all their #1's.

    Cheers!

That's the thing. At least one 1960 #1 that wasn't either on NME's or RR's radar topped both the Melody Maker and Record Mirror charts. I'll examine all when we get to the end of '60.

There was also another link I came across from the "history" thread you'd linked to here. I'll cross-check from there. So there would've likely been more than just the (at least) 74 "extras" from NME between 1960 and 1988, coming from papers where you had more #1's that didn't even make the top of NME's charts, let alone RR, BMRB, Gallup etc.

    Johnny Preston - Running Bear

This is the other song I was previously going to post as liking until realising that it was a future number one.

This hit the top spot a good couple of years before I was born, but I can recall hearing it played on several occasions on the radio in the sixties and liking it as a youngster. I still do and it is arguably the first great number one single of the decade.

The song is from a stage musical of the same title. It takes place in the London underworld and is spoken in Cockney dialect. Has anyone here seen it?

Here's a bad-ass song from the play performed by Adam Faith in 1960. I caught it on Edwardian Radio Rampage.
