Ok, I didn't rush out and buy this alongside my Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, The Jam and Kate Bush!! singles, but its a lovely pop song .

For the one week Ms. Kinney was on top, those that are in my collection include #7, 13 and 46.

 

I have no recollection of watching this on TOTPs whatsoever and didn't hear this song much at the time at all: it also doesn't appear on any comps I have.

Listening to it again, I do remember it and enjoy it.

The Jam - Going Underground / Dreams Of Children

7th No 1 of 1980 and No 454 in total.

"Going Underground" is the first British #1 chart single by The Jam, released in March 1980. It went straight in at #1 in the UK Singles Chart,[2] spending three weeks at the top.[3] It was the first of three instant chart-toppers for the group.
Song profile
"Going Underground" was not released on any of the band's six studio albums, although it has appeared on many compilations and re-releases since then. The song was released as a double A-side with "Dreams of Children", which originally had been intended to be the sole A-side; following a mix-up at the pressing plant, the single became a double A-side, and DJs tended to choose the more melodic "Going Underground" to play on the radio.[4]

The song was ranked at #2 among the "Tracks of the Year" for 1980 by NME.[5]In March 2005, Q magazine placed "Going Underground" at #73 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks, and in October 2006, placed it at #98 in its list of the 100 Greatest Songs Ever.
Covers and parodies
Ade Edmondson's folk punk band The Bad Shepherds covered it in 2013.

Welsh alternative metal band Lostprophets covered the song in 2007 as a B-side to their single 4:AM Forever.

The comedy band Amateur Transplants released a two-minute parody titled "London Underground" in 2005 in the light of the December strike. It became a popular download in the United Kingdom.

The song was covered by Buffalo Tom for the 1999 Jam tribute album Fire and Skill: The Songs of the Jam. This version also was released as part of a double A-side single with Liam Gallagher's and Steve Cradock's version of "Carnation" and reached #6 in the UK singles chart.[6]

Manfred Mann's Earth Band covered the song on their 1986 album "Criminal Tango".

Daryl Denham released a version of the song titled "Go England" in 2002 after Weller gave permission for it to be adapted as a football song.

Dreams of Children
"Going Underground" was coupled with "Dreams of Children" as a double A-side. It opens and is intermittently accentuated with a backmasked sample of the band's 1979 song "Thick as Thieves". In the US the backwards intro was edited out making the single 10 seconds shorter than the UK Version. This US edit is available on the best-of compilation Snap!.

The Jam released two other double A-side singles: "David Watts"/"'A' Bomb in Wardour Street" and "Town Called Malice"/"Precious".

The Jam - Going Underground / Dreams Of Children

I loved this band....and this is a classic single...double A Side.
As Iconic as Going Underground is....I have always prefered Dreams Of Children.
I'll say this as well...never liked The Style Council...and struggle with most of his solo stuff as well...but The Jam were special.

Another brilliant double whammy from The Jam who had caught my attention back in '77 with their debut In The City. Whilst some of the aggression gas been toned down, the still young Paul Weller was showing what a great lyricist and songwriter he was.

I also didn't click with The Style Council, but love Wild Wood and Stanley Road.

Totally agree, The Jam were special.

In the U.S., this was issued as a promo-only release, a "bonus feature" included in their Sound Effects LP. Three variants have been verified: a WLP (white label promo) from Presswell in Ancora, NJ; and copies with warm red stock copy labels pressed by PRC in their Richmond, IN and Compton, CA plants (the latter shown below):

Their US singles came and went, not even denting the charts; I've been led to understand that this is because record buyers would pass up domestic pressings in favor of UK imports.

Had this been issued in the States as a regular 45, it would have been in the PD 2000 series, with the international number below the 80 NP #### matrix numbers.

"Working My Way Back to You" is a song made popular by The Four Seasons in 1966 and The Spinners in 1980.

Written by Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell, the song was originally recorded by The Four Seasons in 1966, reaching number nine on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. In the UK Top 50 chart it spent three weeks - all at No. 50. It is the only hit to feature the group's arranger Charles Calello in the temporary role of bassist/bass vocalist, having replaced original member Nick Massi.

The song is about a man who cheated on his girlfriend and also emotionally abused her. When she leaves, he realizes that he did love her and is very remorseful about his past actions. He vows to win her love back. It is in some ways a re-casting of the melody from their previous hit, "Let's Hang On!".

In 1979 American soul and R&B group The Spinners recorded a medley of "Working My Way Back to You" and Michael Zager's "Forgive Me Girl," topping the UK Singles Chart for two weeks in April 1980.[3] On the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, the medley (released in December 1979 in the U.S.) peaked at the number two position in March and April 1980 for two weeks, behind "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd. The Spinners version also made it to number six on the Soul Singles chart[4] and number eight on the disco/dance chart.[5]
