    1 - NEW - 35 - Siouxsie And The Banshees - CHRISTINE

This was the only new single I bought from this chart and I bought it for three reasons.

    1) I'd bought all the Siouxsie And The Banshees singles up to this point.

    2) I was going out with a girl named Christine when it was released.

    3) I like it!

I did buy two diverse new entries from the album chart from this week.

    Among the US singles from this chart, in my collection are: #2, 5, 10, 12, 19, 20, 27, 35 and 52.

The main point of the chorus of the Billy Joel number - "You may be right / I may be crazy / But it just may be a lunatic you're looking for . . . " - seemed to me reminiscent of the main refrain of a Waylon Jennings song from a few years before: "I've always been crazy / But it's kept me from going insane." Coincidentally, both were in the key of A major.

    Don McLean - Crying

    3 Weeks At No 1

13th No 1 of 1980 and No 460 in total.

"Crying" is a ballad written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson that was a hit for Roy Orbison
    Composition
Dave Marsh calls the song a "rock-bolero" with "blaring strings, hammered tympani, a ghostly chorus, the gentle strum of a guitar, [and] a hint of marimba".[1] Billboard observes an "expressive reading" on the "country-flavored ballad."[2] The personnel on the original recording included Orbison session regulars Bob Moore on bass; Floyd Cramer on piano; Buddy Harman on drums; and Boudleaux Bryant, Harold Bradley, and Scotty Moore on guitar.

    Release and reception
The song was released as a 45-rpm single by Monument Records in July 1961 and reached No. 1 on the United States Cashbox chart for a week on October 7, 1961. On the rival Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 2, where Hit the Road Jack by Ray Charles and his Orchestra kept it from No.1.[3] Despite not reaching the summit in the latter publication, Billboard ranked the record as the No. 4 song of 1961.[4]

In 2002, "Crying" was honored with a Grammy Hall of Fame Award. In 2010, Rolling Stone ranked it 69th on their list of the "500 greatest songs of all time".[5]

Don McLean recorded by far the most successful cover of the song, taking it to No. 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in early 1981.[6] His version of "Crying" also reached No. 2 adult contemporary and No. 6 Country. It fared even better in the UK, where it reached No. 1, spending three weeks atop the UK Singles Chart.[7] McLean issued an album in 1981; however, "Crying" was taken from his 1978 album, Chain Lightning. It became his second greatest hit.

    Don McLean - Crying

A great version....and the most popular, but I really like Roy Orbison's as well.
Emotionally overwrought, but I get these songs far better these days. I guess thats what divorce does to you.

Agree with all of this, except no-one outsings Roy. Don sung it beautifully, but from the wonderful 1988 A Black And White Night:

In the U.S., "Crying" was Mr. McLean's perhaps third best-known hit, after "American Pie" and "Vincent." In the States, it was ish'd on Millennium Records, with a wholly different B side, "Genesis (In The Beginning)":

For that matter, this was also the UK coupling, on EMI:

They say the song at no1 on your 14th birthday defines your life, well it isn't true, never liked the song at the time, it's ok, but I prefer the Only Fools and Horses version. ;)
Of the previous number 1, I remember buying Theme From MASH, Mirror In The Bathroom and Rat Race all the same week. Haven't got any of those singles now sadly, but have all the songs on other things.

    1 - NEW - 39 - Olivia Newton-John And Electric Light Orchestra - XANADU

Not on my radar in 1980, but love it now, though possibly not as much as @Bobby Morrow and @Jarleboy.

    1 - NEW - 40 - Saxon - 747 (STRANGERS IN THE NIGHT)

Loved this and bought it in 1980, but now prefer Olivia!

    1 - NEW - 58 - Black Sabbath - NEON KNIGHTS

Was very warey of Sabbath without Ozzy, but the same friend who pointed out the B-Side of We Are Glass to me, also got me to listen to and then buy Neon Knights; for the flip side, Children Of The Sea.

    1 - NEW - 63 - Kate Bush - BABOOSHKA

Excepting Wuthering Heights where I bought the single and the parent album, The Kick Inside, like the previous single, Breathing, I enjoyed Babooshka via Never For Ever.

Once had #1, but that was a long time ago. As for what I have in the present: #2-4-15, #32-53-/ and #38-43-65.

The album chart was good this week, with a new entry from the Stones straight in at #1.

Olivia Newton-John And The Electric Light Orchestra - Xanadu

14th No 1 of 1980 and No 461 in total.

"Xanadu" is the title song from the soundtrack album Xanadu, and is the title song from the 1980 film of the same name. The song is performed by the Electric Light Orchestra (ELO) and Olivia Newton-John. Newton-John sings the primary vocals, with ELO lead singer Jeff Lynne adding "parenthetic" vocals in the style of their other songs on the Xanadu soundtrack, along with ELO providing the instrumentation. It is Jeff Lynne's favourite song of all that he has written.[1]

The single reached number one in several countries, and was the band's only UK number one single,[2] when it peaked there for two weeks in July 1980. It was certified as "silver" by the British Phonographic Industry.[3] The song peaked at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US.[4]

Uplifting, euphoric pop song....never the greatest ELO fan....you can't mistake their sound ...even on this.
    Olivia sparkles stardust on it.

I love both Olivia and especially ELO, so it's no wonder that their collaboration turned out to be fantastic!
Olivia never looked better than in the music video.

At this time in 1980, being out of the house was more important than the charts and TOTPs, so have no recollection of this being number one.

Bought the Xanadu soundtrack a few years ago and it reinforces what a talent Jeff Lynn is, but more than that, shows off Olivia's excellent voice to perfection. Together they gave us a brilliant and worthy number one.

@Bobby Morrow (still love the avatar!) surely agrees. :D

In the U.S., "Xanadu" was released on Ms. Newton-John's label there, MCA, and was coupled with a duet with one of the kings of movie musicals in the 1940's and '50's, Gene Kelly, "Whenever You're Away From Me":

This did not reach the top of the U.S. charts, though; that fell to Livvy's "Magic" from the same film.
