Now I know we will lose some posters who are not interested in theis decade, but hopefully we'll pick up some new contributions....younger (relative I know!!!) along the way.
Same format....but I'd like to tweak it slightly.
Please comment on the Number 1.....love , hate....indifferent...and also post anything related to your fav singles that are new to the chart that week.
By all means post a pic of your fav sleeve....we are hitting the CD single era now...along with any related video links...or just personal musings.
W.B.....I would love for you to continue to contribute, but I don't think we need to see every pic sleeve from every new release that said week.
People just scroll past them.....and it swamps everything. By all means give us your thoughts and post your fav stuff....I think that's what most people are interested in.
I hope I have not offended you...as I would like you to continue to contribute.
    So...
lets see how this plays out then...I'll try and post a new No1 everyday...we can recap the year as per the other threads.

    Format will be...

    Next...

    Date

    Artist(s) - Song

Amount of weeks At No 1

How many Number 1's that year and the number in total...from when it first started...Dec 1952!!!!!

For me...I ended my 20's and began my 30's here......and it seems like yesterday.

Again, as vinyl was being phased out, this may not be a problem for you in the end.

    Forward bumph...from wiki,
The UK Singles Chart is a record chart compiled on behalf of the British record industry. Until 1 February 1994, the chart was compiled each week by Gallup – after this date, it was managed by Millward Brown, who expanded the number of sales figures sampled, and extended the use of electronic point of sale machines.[1] From July 1998 onwards, compilation of the chart was overseen by The Chart Information Network (CIN) and it was based entirely on sales of physical singles from retail outlets – airplay statistics are not used in compiling the official UK Singles Chart.[2][3] The chart week ran from Sunday to Saturday, and the Top 40 was first revealed on BBC Radio 1 on a Sunday.[4] Record companies began making singles available to radio stations much further in advance of their release dates and making greater use of direct marketing techniques in the 1990s. As a result, the number of singles that entered the charts at number one increased dramatically, and it became commonplace for singles to enter the charts at the top and then plummet down the listing soon after.

Here we go then...just 206 singles to wade thru!!!!!!!

First New but 2nd No1 following Band Aid II's Do They Know Its Christmas at the end of '89 going into the new year...

New Kids On The Block - Hangin' Tough

    13th January 1990

    2 Weeks at No1

    2nd No1 Of 1990 and No 639 In total.

    [IMG][IMG]

"Hangin' Tough" is a 1989 single from New Kids on the Block which was released on Columbia Records. It was the fourth single from the group's second album of the same name. The lead vocals were sung by Donnie Wahlberg.

"Hangin' Tough" peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart on September 9, 1989, and it topped the UK Singles Chart where it became the first No. 1 single of the 1990s. It was their only No. 1 single in the Republic of Ireland and made the Top 10 in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.[1]
    Background
There are two distinct renditions of the song: the original album version, which includes a keyboard solo; and the remixed version, which is arguably more recognizable and is commonly included on Greatest Hits albums. The remixed version features a guitar solo and heavier instrumentation.

"Hanging Tough" was used in the 1989 film The Wizard as well as on the Regular Show episode "High Score." In 1991 it was used as the entrance theme for the tag team of Tony Williams and Brian Lawler in the Memphis, Tennessee-based United States Wrestling Association. Alvin and the Chipmunks released a cover version in 1991 for their album The Chipmunks Rock the House.[2]

It appeared in It and SingStar Dance.

Again, streamlining ain't gonna be a problem from here on out. I suppose it's a good thing for all of us that vinyl was being phased out in this context . . .

Like a few regulars on these threads, I like to see what's in your collections / Likes etc as we go....
I switched to CD in October '85, with my last vinyl buys in '86...but these are albums.
Think I have only purchased a handful of CD singles in 30 odd years.

Here's what I remember, from week to week:
The Vandross number, part of the chorus reminded me a tad of a smidgen of Paula Abdul's "Forever Your Girl." Don't know why . . .

As for "When The Night Comes," I seem to remember it being the last big hit of Mr. Cocker's.

I have zero interest in NKotB.

Some new entries that I know and like:
Every song on Runaway Horses by Belinda Carlisle is very good to excellent. One of the 1980s' best LPs.

First number one single of the decade and the first time I've heard it, so will try to say something positive about it.

I can positively say that it got about two minutes of my time that it wouldn't have got back in 1990! Not my thing now, but definitely wouldn't have considered it in 1990.

Del Amitri - Nothing Ever Happens

One of my favourite songs from the excellent Waking Hours album, which I had bought the LP of the previous year.

(By 1990 I had my first CD player which as a multi changer was convenient in my company van, but was very much a vinyl guy and wouldn't have a domestic CD for another two years.)

Apart from Nothing Ever Happens being a great tune and arrangement with a killer key change, it also had good and for a "Pop" song fairly thought provoking lyrics with a couple of really memorable lines: the needle returns to the start of the song and typewriters ageing it a little...

Post office clerks put up signs saying "position closed"
And secretaries turn off typewriters and put on their coats
And janitors padlock the gates for security guards to patrol
And bachelors phone up their friends for a drink
While the married ones turn on a chat show
And they'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Gentlemen, time please, you know we can't serve anymore
Now the traffic lights change to stop, when there's nothing to go
And by five o'clock everything's dead
And every third car is a cab
And ignorant people sleep in their beds
Like the doped white mice in the college lab
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
Telephone exchanges click while there's nobody there
The Martians could land in the car park and no one would care
Close-circuit cameras in department stores shoot the same movie every day
And the stars of these films neither die nor get killed
    Just survive constant action replay
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow
And bill holdings advertise products that nobody needs
While angry from Manchester writes to complain about
    All the repeats on T.V.
And computer terminals report some gains
On the values of copper and tin
While American businessmen snap up Van Goghs
For the price of a hospital wing
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
The needle returns to the start of the song
And we all sing along like before
And nothing ever happens, nothing happens at all
They'll burn down the synagogues at six o'clock
And we'll all go along like before
And we'll all be lonely tonight and lonely tomorrow

Kylie Minogue - Tears On My Pillow

    27th January 1990

    1 Week at No1

    3rd No1 Of 1990 and No 640 In total.

    [IMG] [IMG]
"Tears on My Pillow" is a doo-wop song written by Sylvester Bradford and Al Lewis in 1958. The composition was first recorded by Little Anthony and the Imperials on End Records and was that group's debut recording under that name. The music was arranged by the great arranger Belford "Sinky" Hendricks who also arranged "Two People in the World", "Hurts So Bad", and "Shimmy, Shimmy, Ko-Ko-Bop". Their original recording of the song became a Billboard Top 10 Pop smash, peaking at #4, and was The Imperials' first million-seller. It was also a two-sided hit, with its flip side, "Two People in the World," also becoming a major hit. Although it remains one of the Imperials' signature songs, "Tears on My Pillow" has been extensively covered, including a No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart version by Kylie Minogue in January 1990.[1]
    The Imperials' original version
Early copies of the single were credited simply to "The Imperials," a group which had previously been known as "The Duponts" and "The Chesters." Brooklyn, New York deejay Alan Freed gave the group's lead singer, Anthony Gourdine, top billing while introducing the single over the air and the moniker of "Little Anthony and the Imperials" stuck.

"Tears on My Pillow" was a #4 hit single in the United States. Selling over a million copies, "Tears on My Pillow" was the most successful single of the Imperials' doo wop period. Its success would be matched only by the Imperials' 1964 single "Goin' Out of My Head." The Imperials ("Little Anthony" Gourdine, Clarence Collins, Ernest Wright, Tracy Lord, and Nate Rogers - the last two of whom were later replaced by Sammy Strain) performed the song on numerous TV programs, including The Dick Clark Show [2] and on the PBS Oldies special, Rock, Rhythm, and Doo-Wop in 1958 and 2002 respectively. They also performed the tune on the American Bandstand 40th Anniversary Special (also in 2002).[3][4]

I had no idea that they had quite a career in the UK! They are regarded as a one-hit wonder here on the Continent, scoring their only hit in 1993 thanks to a lot of naked people in the song's music video (though the song was also quite catchy!).

Their first album Happiness was more a 'band' album. They released a remix album 'Blissed Out' later in the year which in hindsight was way ahead of its time.
They disappeared and returned as a husband and wife duo in 1993 with Concience...which is more eco dance than Indy pop.
    Interesting...and I still liked them.

Give me Little Anthony & The Imperials as with "Tears On My Pillow" any day. But as to what I remember from my side of the pond viz the charts during this stretch . . .
    Quite a few covers, I've noticed . . .
