Waste of raw material and really stupid if they would fit on one disc . Hit the stop button if you dont want them.

Lou Reed‘s Coney Island Baby has got some awesome bonus tracks which fit perfectly.

I agree. Lots of Jethro Tull bonus tracks are essential. One of them, "Jack-A-Lynn (early version)" on the New Shoes Edition of Heavy Horses has become one of my favorite JT tracks:

The Crossing added to Big Country's The Crossing on the 1996 re-issue. It's the best song on the album, too! (Well, in my humble opinion.)

Best group of bonus songs Ive ever heard is the Rascals Greatest Hits CD, 5 amazing songs added on to what was "Time Peace" before. They were apparently going in a gospel rock direction, and they were great at it

    Ray of Hope
    Heaven
    Carry Me Back
    Glory Glory

and especially the wonderfully furious rocker "See"

"Pure & Easy" from Who's Next

'Jack Rabbit" and "Screw You Blues' from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

"Madman Across the Water" --with Mick Ronson on guitar--from Tumbleweed Connection.

I think a lot of times they make the bonus tracks fit by giving us only a few of them from the vault. I agree with you on the waste of materials aspect, but I'd rather have a collected amount of unreleased material on a separate disc, rather than shoving them onto the artist's completed work.

Back when they released The Beatles catalogue on CD, I thought it was a rip-off that those first albums weren't combined on a twofer, like Capitol did with the Beach Boys first albums. In retrospect, I think it was wise. And the Past Masters albums do a wonderful job of compiling and completing...so much so that they are terrific stand-alone releases.

I sometimes do hit the stop button. Sometimes I don't. But I'm never dissatisfied with having a CD finish with the artist's last intended song.
