You ve got me thinking about this One. If everything is a filler than maybe nothing is a filler. Does this have any Logic? Maybe thats just the way they wanted it to be, a pleasent listening experience with no ups or downs.
I have to listen to this one again since i havent listened to it in years. Maybe i revaluate my ideas about it.

Lots of folks mentioned Physical Graffiti but weren't a bunch of tracks essentially rejects - i.e weaker tracks/filler - from earlier sessions?

Live albums don't really apply in this context unless it is all new material

Most any vital artist can fill out an hour and a half of live material with great songs

"Rejects from earlier sessions" doesn't automatically mean "filler". How many great "rejected" songs have emerged over the years? Zillions!

Artists aren't always the best judges of their material...

If it says "no filler" in the title, it must be true! :D

However, in the case of Physical Graffiti Boogie With Stu is filler in my opinion. It was also left over from 1971.

Oh, I'm sure plenty of "leftovers" weren't very good songs - I just reject the notion that leftovers are automatically flawed/inferior...

I gotta say 3 of my favorite double LP’s with no filler are Zappa’s Freak Out!, Zappa’s Uncle Meat, and Captain Beefheart’s Trout Mask Replica. On Freak Out, I feel like all the songs are solid. And the double LP format IMO does this album wonders, since the more avant grade stuff’s on disc 2. If you’re just introducing someone to it, you could just recommend disc 1 to start. Uncle Meat’s a really great all around album, and probably my 2nd favorite Zappa LP just behind WOIIFTM. Honestly, King Kong which takes up the entirety of side 4’s worth it alone! And Trout Mask’s such a diverse album, I feel like there really isn’t any filler. The spoken word tracks like “Orange Claw Hammer” feel like good tracks to give the listener a rest from the maelstrom of music chaos the rest of the LP can be.

  19. What one considers filler, the other may not that’s a tough one to answer. I enjoy every track on The White Album while there is one on Tusk by Christine and two by Stevie I just can’t stand.

This is so true. There's a dude on this thread reaming me out cause I dared say that ...And The Gods Made Love on Electric Ladyland sounded like filler to me. It does. Sounds like a bunch of noise effects & whooshing that could've been done in an hour.
    Oh well.

    The Who - 'Quadrophenia'
The Rolling Stones - 'Exile On Main Street'
    The Clash - 'London Calling'

The Beatles 'White Album' is one of the best double LPs you'll ever hear, but even it has a total of about one side of filler. They should have listened to George Martin and tightened it up.

Before we start, "Wheels Of Fire" doesn't count. :)

Most of the big concept jobs need all the songs they've got (and a few need more).
Although The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (Genesis) and Preservation Act II (Kinks) could both do with a trim around side three.

EDIT: The Wall does become a bit of a slog at one point, but I think that's necessary.

The Who - Quadrophenia is definitely filler-free (I don't personally think 'Is It In My Head' is integral to the plot, but it certainly isn't 'filler'.)

Agreed in general, but I'd argue that we could live without 'Underture'.

I love The White Album, it's sprawling unfocused nature is all part of it's charm for me. I tend to playlist everything from 1968 and the Yellow Sub tracks alongside it and drag it out even further. :)

(I always religiously skip 'I Will', though)
