Whoah. I'm not much of a collector of memorabilia, but that's something! If you don't mind me asking, how much did that set you back to acquire it?

Lately I've been delving into the deepest reaches of obscure classic country in search of artists who speak to my soul. One such singer is Daniel Raye Andrade AKA Hank the Drifter (I'll let you guess who his primary influence was). Between the mid 50's and early 70's he released a handful of singles and one album on his own New England label, all of which were true to the style of his hero.

What really caught my attention was his LP, A Lonely Stranger (Drifting Through Your Town). By the time of its recording his voice had become more guttural and haggard, barely capable of his hero's signature high lonesome wail. No fiddle or pedal steel to be heard, just a couple guitars and a bass which frequently struggles to keep time. Almost every song ends abruptly before the two-minute mark with Hank leaving the others to pick up the pieces as he suddenly grinds the tempo to a halt. It's crude, shambolic, and real. Recommended for anyone who equally enjoys Hank Williams and Hasil Adkins.

What a great post, love that stuff. Never heard of Hank the Drifter, but I checked out the YT links, and he reminds me of some of the artists on the old "Mar-Vel Masters" LP series. I haven't listened to those in a long time, I need to refresh my memory.

Thanks for shining a light on Hank (Mr. Andrade).:righton:

Got both of these at the local thrift store this week. The Haggard CD is a bit of an oddball that maybe someone on here might know about. The back case insert says it's HDCD but the disc itself doesn't decode as HDCD nor is there any mention of HDCD on the disc itself. Weird because I've seen pictures of this release on Discogs with HDCD clearly printed on the disc. Maybe a later non-HDCD pressing while using the old inserts?

Very interesting, I'll have to check and see if any of the other CDs from the 16 Biggest Hits series are marked as HDCD as well.. This Merle disc was a budget comp comprised mostly of re-recordings including a new yet almost identical version of 'Pancho & Lefty' with Willie.

Here's the Discogs entry: Merle Haggard - 16 Biggest Hits

You can see HDCD on the back insert and on the disc. Mine has it on the insert but nothing on the disc.

Was reminded of this the other day while at a local record store. Ran across a copy of Roy Orbison "16 Biggest Hits" and it had the HDCD on both the back insert and on the disc. The only entry I see for it on the DR database though was done without any HDCD decoding, so hard to tell if it actually has it or not unless it's one of the titles you have.

Just got this obscure single of indeterminate 60's vintage. Heard of it from Mississippi Records' Ghost Memories compilation, which is the only place you can hear the flip side. Despite being a cover of a Connie Smith song, it sounds several years older than Connie's 1967 original.

Recently tracked down this disc I've been hunting for about a year, the only CD by Bud Deckelman. He came storming out of the gate in 1954 with "Daydreaming," which sold well enough on Meteor Records of Memphis that he got a contract with MGM. He was one of the artists they hoped would become their replacement for Hank Williams, but he was never able to repeat his first success. If you like unabashed 50's hillbilly weepers, you'll like Bud. His songs have been covered by the likes of Ray Price, Wanda Jackson, and John Fogerty.

If you count Mike Nesmith's solo work (1965 - 1975), I just acquired the Apple Music version of Cosmic Partners: Michael Nesmith with Red Rhodes. I have been digitally collecting Nez's solo albums for a few years now.

My co-worker turned me onto Doug Stone because of my love of country-rock from the 1970s. I have his Super Hits album, which contains the track "I'd Be Better Off (In A Pine Box).
