Hi, I have some questions about a mixdown tape I have acquired. Here are the details: On the front of the box, it has 3 "10 track Tape Legend" pages: Top page: The title reads "Doug Lyon." It has several tracks listed. Middle page: The title reads "ZAPPA 20 OCT 65." The table has the following "Selections" (as written): "Anyway The Wind Blows" "Im So Happy I Could Cry" "Go Cry On Someone Shoulder" "Such A Fool" "I'm Not Satisfied 1-(2)" "I Ain't Got No Heart 1-2" "Love Of My Life" "Front Of Tape Trouble Coming Every Day" Bottom page: Title "Chuck Markulis." It has a few tracks listed. The label on the box states: Original Sound 7120 Sunset Boulevard Hollywood, California 90046 The tape and reel appear to be in great shape from my inexperienced perspective (clean, no smell, not sticky). Reel diameter is 10.375". The tape is about 1" wide, but I have not measured. Info printed on the box: "Magnetic Products Division 3M Company" "Scotch" "201" "Low noise" "1.5 mil Acetate 754-1063-090" My questions are: -- When each new page is added to the box, is the tape re-wound to the beginning and recorded over, or are the new songs simply appended to the end of the previous artist's recording? In other words, could this still retain early Zappa recordings? -- How do I preserve it in a normal residential environment? -- Does this have any value beyond cool factor?
Date and location might indicate recordings circa or related to those found on the Joe's Corsage release. Just my speculation, though.
FWIW Chuck Markulis was a record producer who co-owned Nite Records in the late 50s. The label signed doo-wop group The Gallahads and Markulis co-wrote their hit Lonely Guy, which came out on the Del-Fi label in 1960.
Vaultmeister, I've never actually participated in forums before, so I didn't know about the Inbox at the top of the page. Working on a reply there.
The middle page... I don't know how to get it to appear here, but you should be able to view in another tab. Please forgive my noobiness here.
Only the outer bit of the tape is rough. The rest looks smooth. I'm using imgur, also for the first time.
Diameter of reel. It appears to be dust on the side of the tape. Have to go for now. Thanks to all for your input so far...
Once your image is on the imgur page, right-click and choose "copy image address", then paste THAT here as an image.
yep that would certainly look like some kind of master tape of some sort. Very interesting. I would love to hear whats on there. Someone said Joe's Corsage? Gonna look that one up. very kool reel you got there, I would try to make sure it got preserved and archived properly. jb
That tape mold!! Joe "@Vaultmeister " Travers would be the guy to talk to about a tape like this. A multitrack from this early period is grail find.
I know where you’re coming from Joe, you’ve obviously seen it more than most “for real” there are aspects to it that look “FZ like”, the word “Fool” as in “How Could I Be Such A” looked like FZ’s hand, but written in a hurry. But you would know. Cheers
Interesting to read Never On Thursday... Originally it was Never On Sunday... And ultimately, Take Your Clothes Off...
