Damn, i've listened to the SACDs and the 90's Island Masters only and i'm not a big fan of neither of them. Now i'm curious about the 2016's...
I think Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham did a great job on the 2016s, "Fire And Water" is particularly delicious, so to is "Heartbreaker", but they're all good.
I have been able to fight off the urge to pick them up but it's been tough. Tipping the scales for me is that I have no desire to monetarily support a venture which COULD have been fantastic (decent remastering and nice bonus tracks) if not for the obstruction of Paul Rodgers. Why should I reward him with my hard earned dollars when it's him who threw a monkey wrench into the whole thing....sigh...
The 2016 remasters are unique ones? No older (or newer) release other than the 2016 UK CDs/LPs uses it? I wish they had the bonus tracks though. I sense they're not that much better than the older Island Masters CDs nor the Japanese SACDs, so at least they could've added the extra stuff.
I believe so. I agree that bonus tracks should have been included, to that end I kept my 2002 Peter Mew remasters.
Wendell Richardson plays guitar with Free on the US tour January - February 1973, no official recording, but only a few live bootlegs. At that time even Paul Rodgers played the guitar, so I wonder who took the solos?
I understand you perfectly, but it is a curiosity. I think it's Wendell Richardson for the frequent use of the wah-wah pedal
Richardson was just the wrong guy. Not his fault. Credit to them for not getting a Koss soundalike and trying something different, but African-rock on a Fender didn’t work. At all.
Well, they supposedly did ask Mick Taylor to play on the last tour and he declined so they were sort of hamstrung with a tour starting and no guitarist.
Hey no one doubts that Paul Kossoff was a great guitarist! No one doubts that Wendell Richardson was not suitable! I just had a curiosity about who did the guitar solos in the US tour January - February 1973...
The "pink labels" you guys keep talking about are German LPs like this one: Or are they UK LPs with just the label border in pink, like this one: Cheers.
Referencing Pink Island labels of (English acts in particular) is most often UK pressings but also can include those from other countries such as Germany or Australia. The pink rim palm tree labels first came out in the latter part of 1970 in the UK though Pink labels lasted (for example) well into 1971 in Australia.
See, for example: Island ILPS 9089 – Free ILPS 9104 – Free ILPS 9120 – Free CVINYL.COM - Label Variations: Island Records History Of Island Labels | Big Muff (specific to John Martyn discography but shows timeline of label changes) The Island UK "Pink Rim" Label Variations Thread.
If you mean the cds his name appears in the booklets, if not on discogs. I wouldn't know about the vinyl.
Anybody know what the best released SACD veraion of "Free - Live!" is? Amazingly. I just realized that I don't own that 'cept on vinyl. Something I should rectify.
