Gotcha. Actually I found an answer on another board, hooray. I'd been looking for this movie for a couple of years now (ever since I saw it, probably back in 2010). It's called 99 River Street, John Payne gives a gripping performance, up there with Mitchum and Ryan. Also excellent performances with Evelyn Keyes and Peggy Castle. Supporting cast is real impressive, too. The direction is sharp and the cinematography is first rate. And here it is:

    Nazarin (1959, Luis Buñuel)
A priest in a poor Mexican community lives a charitable life in accordance with his religious principles, but many others do not return the favor.
An acerbic satire on the catholic church and its ministers, Nazarin is the film that got director, Buñuel, back on the international scene after earlier fame. One of his best. Finally watching it tonight. Good copy. See it before they yank it.

Yeah, saw this not too long ago. Good one. Was looking over thr thread in search for a film link I posted - man, is it full of dead links! I expected as much over time but I'm beginning to think it's become a magnet for copyright cops. It's too bad because there have been some great recs over the last couple of months.

Death of a Salesman (1985, Volker Schlöndorff)
Film treatment of Athur Miller's classic play about an aging traveling salesman recognizes the emptiness of his life and tries to fix it.
Good looking copy of a tv version with an excellent cast including Dustin Hoffman, Kate Reid, John Malkovich and Stephen Lang.

    Certified Copy (2010, Abbas Kiarostami)
To promote his latest book, a middle-aged British writer meets a French woman in Tuscany who leads him to the village of Lucignano.
First time watch of this very slow moving/philosophical study for me. Excellent print.

Noirember: He Walked By Night. Taken from a true story about a military veteran who left his family due to mental issues after the war and starts stealing and resorts to crime. He did use the storm drains/sewer to maneuver around in. Police procedural and became the template for the Dragnet TV series. A young Jack Web is in the movie too.

Shack Out On 101 (1955, Edward Dein)
An isolated diner on California's 101 highway provides the backdrop of the story involving nuclear secrets, foreign spies and federal agents.
Goofball Noir. Must more out there like this one but not many. Commies hiding out at the local neighborhood diner. Strictly for laughs. The interplay between Keenan Wynn and a very young Lee Marvin makes it.

Three childhood friends, Martha, Walter and Sam, share a terrible secret. Over time, the ambitious Martha and the timid Walter have married. She is a cold businesswoman; he is the district attorney: a perfect combination to dominate the corrupt city of Iverstown at will. But the unexpected return of Sam, after years of absence, deeply disturbs the life of the odd couple.

    Vincent (1987, Paul Cox)
Told through his letters to his brother Theo, from 1872 until his tragic death, this documentary, on the life of artist Vincent Van Gogh is a first hand insight into the man, his motivations, and his humanity.
One of my favorites. Narrated by the late John Hurt.

The Usual Suspects (1995, Bryan Singer)
A sole survivor tells of the twisty events leading up to a horrific gun battle on a boat, which began when five criminals met at a seemingly random police lineup.
Seen parts but never the whole thing. Another one on my movie-bucket list.

The song after which this movie was named was written in the 1930's by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler. The two most popular versions of its many recordings were by Billie Holiday and Lena Horne, who is featured performing the song in this movie. You'll certainly see why this movie helped launched Horne's career and why this movie is a treasure in African American film history.
