Still slightly disturbing...but if there's a truckload of vintage outtakes and live material from '73 they can use any cover they like!
John & Everybody, Don't forget that we got to listen to an earlier or alternate take of "Angie" during the Crossfire Hurricane documentary. And thanks once again to John for passing this along. I hope this comes true. Anything from the Taylor Era and in Super Deluxe form from said period will be bought by me. I'll also be putting in for the Standard Deluxe as well.
I believe the Empire Pool in 1973 is where the absolutely incredible version of Heartbreaker is from. It would almost be worth it for that version alone.
Mick also considered including a 1973 version of "Angie" (maybe the KBFH version) on "Love You Live". He mentions it in the November 3rd, 1977 issue of Rolling Stone. The interview is at: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/hot-stuff-from-mick-and-keith-19771103 "...Oh yeah, it does. You see, we've got so many ways of doing 'Tumbling Dice' – I mean, which one do you pick? And we decided to go with the latest shows rather than the American ones because I just preferred to put out the things we recorded later, rather than earlier. I mean, I did listen to things we did in 1973 and I contemplated at one point – I'm not sure if the rest of the band contemplated – but I contemplated putting on a version of 'Angie' which had Mick Taylor on it, 'cause it was so good, you know. But we decided to just keep it to the most recent stuff, which I think is a decent approach..."
That would be something. Let's just hope that we get...at least some of what we're looking for. Is there any word as to when this might be released?
It has not been confirmed. It is just a rumor on the some of the forums for now. We'll have to wait and see.
It does seem like one of the more likely albums to get a deluxe treatment...along with Tattoo You and (hopefully) Beggars Banquet and/or Let It Bleed.
I'm getting really confused about the different concerts, and different format combinations out there.... As far as I can see so far we have 1971 Marquee Club 1975 LA Forum 1981 Hampton Coliseum 1982 Leeds 1990 Tokyo Dome each available in various DVD, Bluray, DVD+LP combinations. Just supposing someone had quite a lot of Stones material already (ie everything up to Goats Head Soup on either vinyl or ABKCO SACD or generally both) and really didn't have enough money to buy all of these... Are there any that really really stand out, as essentially essential and not just essential??
My favorites are the 1971 and 1975 shows. The 1971 show has Mick Taylor and has a live version of the rarely played I Got The Blues. It was worth for me to see the live footage with Taylor and he shines on the live version of Dead Flowers. The 1975 Forum show is much better than the officially released Love You Live material and contains live versions of some of the songs from the It's Only Rock 'N' Roll album since the Stones elected not to tour behind it in 1974. They were also still playing many of their classic songs from the Mick Taylor years and it is interesting to compare Mick Taylor's playing with Ronnie's on these songs. Ronnie also played well during the majority of the 1975 tour as I feel he was trying to impress the Stones into making him an official member of the band. I like the Leeds 1982 show better than Hampton 1981 and it has has a more punkish feel to it. The set lists are nearly identical. Both shows are better than the official Still Life live album. Tokyo 1990 includes a cool live version of 2000 Light Years From Home a song that was omitted from the official Flashpoint live album from the period.
John's pretty much hit the nail on the head there, I think. I would rate the recent From The Vault releases (in descending order of importance) thus... Marquee '71 L.A Forum '75 Leeds '82 Hampton '81 Tokyo '90 If I was to choose only one as essentially essential, it's the 1971 Marquee set, but I really like the '75, '82 & '81 shows too. I also agree with John's sentiments regarding the L.A, Leeds and Hampton shows being better than the respective live albums from that era. I guess Love You Live and - especially - Still Life, will now be permanently confined to the 'never to be played again' category!
The fairest thing would be a single sterling example of each tour through the years so fans who witnessed those tours could relive them. We have that with the '75 LA Forum and '78 Texas show. We have the '81 Largo show AND the '82 European version of the same thing. We have the '90 Tokyo show which sort of negates the need for anything from '89 although AC was a dandy. "At The Max" from that year consisted of an inordinate number of close-up shots filmed sans audience. We have Brussels '73 but something from '72 would be nice. MSG and Philly were both apparently professionally recorded that year. The full '69 MSG would be great. In later years Miami and New Jersey were both filmed and recorded in 1994. The opening night in Chicago was a dandy and was fully recorded. A 1999 No Security show would be a welcome addition as the playing was stellar and the set lists very unusual. Surely there's something in the can from somewhere on that one. 2002 could be troublesome as they had the stadium/arena/theater gimmick going on but perhaps a three disc set encapsulating the best of each night in, for example, Toronto. 2005-07 already has the Beacon (Shine A Lot) and Austin (Biggest Bang DVD). The latter could make a good standalone example of that tour and has some cool stuff ("Bob Wills is Still the King"). The recent era has the Hyde Park show from a couple of years ago which is essentially the set they've played since.
Some of these aren't available in both audio/video but I'd like to see the following (in order of preference): Ft.Worth-Philly '72 (and more '73 for that matter I guess!) MSG '69 (in original show running order) Atlantic City '89 something pre-69 (not as aware of what's really available) Paris '76 Voodoo Lounge tour (not necessarily Miami) Bridges/No Security tours anything after No Security (last not because I think it's garbage and wouldn't purchase but I'd just rather see the other stuff first)
I have the '71 and '75 shows. I immensely enjoyed both shows, but there was some fire and energy at the Marquee club that made it the best Stones video I have. My dream From The Vault release is Knebworth '76.
I'd like to see 1970 show in good sound/video quality from the shows when Roll Over Beethoven was in the set list. I'm not sure if this exists or not.
Is the Marquee Club release only available with a video disc? I don't need to see these guys, just hear them. I can't seem to find a CD-only release.
