It's nearly Halloween time, and what better time to share songs that set your heart racing? That's right folks, I want to hear your recommendations for genuinely scary and unsettling songs. Not just mildly creepy, cutesy songs with a vague Halloween theme - I'm talking stuff that makes you afraid to close your eyes at night, stuff that makes you sweat on a psychological level. Let's start with a classic:
Here's another one, from Schoenberg's "Pierrot Lunaire," featuring extraordinary vocalist Jan DeGaetani: (It starts out extremely quietly)
The first time I ever heard this one was about 2 or 3 in the morning, driving home late at night after a gig with my old band. I was only minutes away from home but this came through on one of the weird college radio stations. I can still remember exactly how I felt as I listened to this on the dark road, and it felt like everything was in slow motion with the street lights looking hazier than usual. Very chilling moment, and once I pulled into my driveway a few minutes later, I had to sit for a few minutes to make sure I was actually awake and not dreaming.
From Dead Inside, the final album by the Golden Palominos (RIP Anton Fier) for which confrontational poet/author Nicole Blackman provided the voice and words. Album opener "Victim" is a cheery retelling of a woman's thoughts as she is abducted and eventually murdered by her kidnapper.

The Beach Boys, "Mrs O Leary's Cow" aka "Fire Sequence" from Smile Especially eerie when you know the story behind Brian's creation of this track - the plastic fire hats, the smoke in the studio, the building that burned down a block away, etc.
Psihokratija Ponoćni hod (transl. "Midnight Walk") (from Album mentalnih fotografija, 1988) (ex-Yugoslav 80's Epic Gothic-Rock)
