"Reilly: Ace of Spies" was a very popular miniseries inspired by a real life British spy in pre and post-revolutionary Russia and made Sam Neill popular. Some episodes were directed by Martin Campbell, who then went on to make his masterpiece 'Edge of Darkness" - the best British miniseries ever and which involves spies from the UK and the US.
I started watching Rubicon again last night. I really loved this series, and was so mad it didn't get a second season. It does resolve enough to make worth watching, though.
Maybe not fitting the exact definition of "spy thriller" it certainly comes close...Hunters on PrimeVideo. Season 2 is now up and it's subtitled "the final season" so I guess this is it. It's...other level fantastic. I'll also throw in it has the best opening credits of any series, ever.
I would suggest the series "Turn", if you can find it somewhere. I forget the network but I think it was AMC. Definitely a spy thriller, gritty and real. Very well done.
BBC series MI-5, known in the U.K. as “Spooks.” +1 for “Burn Notice.” Great fun, I and everyone I know who’s watched it loves it. The main character, played by Jeffrey Donovan, voice-over narrations often started with “When you’re a spy … “ (!)
Max Manus: Man of War: Max Manus: Man of War (2008) - IMDb Based on a true story about Norwegian resistance fighters who were dedicated to driving the Nazis out of Norway. Max Manus was not created by some Hollywood screenwriter; he was a real flesh-and-blood saboteur who was twice awarded Norway's highest decoration for military gallantry. I own this movie on blu-ray and, over the years, have watched it about five times. And I'll watch it some more. Max, give 'em hell!
Really? I thought it was one of the worst series I have ever seen , painfully slow and Guy Pierce is just not believable as Philby. There was too much back and forth as well Shame as I was really looking forward to it as I loved the book . I did end up finishing the series but it was a hell of a struggle , will never watch it again . Cambridge Spurs is much better .
5 episodes too long. The usual BBC tosh these days, sadly. There was some brief lesbian intrigue, but that was about it.
Lol yeah soo true . I actually laughed pretty much all the way through it as I counted up all the identity boxes being ticked . UK TV is getting really bad for that .
I recently watched it again for the first time in years and I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time.
BBC = naff. (With one major caveat, the current season of Happy Valley, which is a cop drama, not a spy thriller. Sunday nights can't come soon enough.)
I've watched it several times over the years. One of my favorites. The movie stays pretty close to the true story which is fascinating.
Your absolutely spot on here mate . 3 Days of the Condor is one of my all time favourites and the 2 seasons of Condor were excellent.
yeah I would have watched it the same amount if not more . I was fascinated by the Hannsen case from Day 1 and have pretty much all the books . A major part of the story the movie did not touch upon was Hansen’s relationship with a Stripper but there are obvious time constraints in a movie so I get that . But it’s a great movie and anyone interested in the espionage genre should definitely see it .
