The 580 is basically the 600 with _supposedly_ less attention to fully matching the drivers. In listening tests, I've never encountered anyone who could actually tell the difference. The 580/600 with the 650 cable (available from Sennheiser for about $20) (or the 650, which is very close) is a lot better than the 598. The ONLY better thing about the 598 is that it's more efficient. If you are driving these headphones from a portable mp3 player or phone without an outboard amp, the 598 is a better choice. If you are listening at home from a good amp, the 580/600/650 is better--more neutral, more detailed.
Thanks for the info. Sometimes I use my 580s with my pre/pro, but I also sometimes use them with various portable devices (not on the go, though; while still at home). I've noticed that the 580s sound very good with some portable devices but not others, presumably an indication that some devices simply aren't able to power the 580s very well. Maybe the 598s will be better suited for those devices.
I have the 598's and I love them. I think they sound great, but then again, I don't have the world's most high end equipment.

I think about $75.00 when they were released, but there were plenty of deals that had them down to about $59.95 at times.

About $40 was preorder price but since then they are $40-50 each. Those sets are nice and it's a good price.
I really appreciate the links. I got the first McCartney and the Garcia/Sanders set, which I had been looking for a good deal on.
I wonder if the McCartney sets are still numbered editions? I got them when they came out, but would be interested to see if people still get that, and if so what the numbers are?
So you could still get a numbered edition, but it really doesn't mean much. Although if they are clearing out older stock you might get a lower number? I did that with Band on the Run, in the same hardbound series as these. They are nice sets, and it doesn't look like the other remasters will now follow this same format. It's quite compact, simple, stylish and well worth having. I'm less keen on the big box approach that doesn't fit on the shelf!
I bet they are moving old stock to make room for the Venus and Mars & Speed Of Sound archive editions!
