Fascinating! "Ask Jerome". To hear Candyman so many times was spellbinding. All in its infancy? Is that Ozzy at 18:32?
This evening’s listening is GarciaLive Vol. 13: Poplar Creek — September 16, 1989. “When the change was made uptown and the Big Man joined the band” Jerry Garcia Band joined by the Big Man, Clarence Clemons (of the E Street Band) on tenor saxophone for the entire show—the final stop on JGB’s 1989 East Coast Tour. This is one super-smooth, great-sounding release (if you like sax). I: Cats Under The Stars, They Love Each Other, Let It Rock, I Shall Be Released, Someday Baby, Dear Prudence, Let’s Spend The Night Together. II: How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door, Think, Waiting For A Miracle, Evangeline, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Tangled Up In Blue. 1989/2020 Round Records (3) – JGFRR1031
I also heard about something with the chieftans from around the time they opened for old and in the way from 73 from the owsley stash.
Trixie talks about upcoming releases and future projects at 29:00 here: Interesting comment about Reconstruction: We're working hard on Reconstruction, for sure. There's politics and reasons, but yeah, that's one that's very high: everyone wants that. So, we're working: we've got a small army of people, chipping away at these things.
Linda Kahn owns the rights to the Reconstruction recordings. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Garcia Family were the ones holding it up.
Yes, that ownership situation is presumably what she referred to by "politics and reasons". We don't know which party has been holding it up, but they're obviously working on it.
Great to hear that there may be a “Reconstruction”. I am not greedy-I want a multi show box set!!! Perfectly reasonable as far as I can see.
Just finishing Legion of Mary 3-15-75 at Keystone. I've yet to hear a bad LoM show. This one has pretty good sound, seems to be a lower generation tape than some of these others. They concentrate on the shorter numbers, which is nice for a change. (I heard 3-8-75 last week, that seemed like one 45 minute jam over jazz standards I couldn't recognize (still good though.) Fierro is playing some Lovelight licks at the end of "Talkin' About You."
I am loving Volume 14. I know -controversial period and maybe not the best show to pick but I am really having fun listening to this one again. I didn’t spend much time with it on initial release. The tape is clean, clear and puts you in the 5th row or so. Crowd is great-reminds me what it was like to see a show when the big guy was still with us.
No, apparently not. In the YouTube video above, Trixie mentions something about the Chieftains and Owsley in connection with that, so like @davmar77 says above, it's likely from the Old & in the Way period. Here some contextual material I found: Jerry Garcia's Middle Finger: Chieftains Opening for OAITW
A couple months ago the OSF crew posted that they found tons of Old & In The Way masters that they are in the process of transferring. I am not sure I would call this “with Grisman” although he obviously was in this band.
Yeah, sounds like an interesting release but not as exciting as a Garcia/Grisman show from the 90s IMO.
Legion of Mary 4.9.75, The Bottom Line, New York, NY This show is amazing... I keep going back to it.
Yeah, that's what I at first thought Trixie was referring to as well. But the fact that they're "working with the Grisman family" on this release could suggest other projects in the future. Wasn't there always some low-level tension between Grisman and the whole GD juggernaut? Maybe some of that has eased to allow for this opening.
It’s been a pretty long time since the last JG/DG release, right? IIRC the most recent is Been All Around This World which was all the way back in March 2004. Long overdue for some of the live shows.
The epic The Pizza Tapes - Extra Large Edition (3CD) was released in 2009... I agree the live shows are very worthy as well. Seven live Garcia/Grisman tracks appear on the Grateful Dawg soundtrack CD, and two more on Various Artists CD Acoustic Disc - 100% Handmade Music, Volume VI.
Listening to the upgrade of Garcia Grisman 2/3/91 Warfield that circulated last month. Sounds really good and it’s a nice performance too.
