My personal nightmare, that last post. Oog.

We just had a Brent show. I don't think we get another in a row. Next year maybe, and if it turned out to be 12/1/79 that would be coolio.

12/31/69 makes sense in that 1/2/70 & 1/3/70 are also possible choices, so this would be the type of near miss referred to in the clues. It would also be about time for another NYE show, with more to come soon hopefully.

Something from 76 makes sense, too. Anything from 72 would as well, but I hope not. Another 1972 first set is the last thing in my collection.

And what's with the multi-tracks? They wouldn't necessarily be part of this series, but will we see any of them soonish? Multi-track box set would be sweet and meaty.

What time is this announcement happening? 1PM ET/10 AM PT?

I’m not expecting anything mind blowingly awesome. I’m sure that’s getting saved for the subscription announcement. But I’d love to be proven incorrect.

  7. If ever a band was deserving to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (outside of the Beatles) it’s definitely Silver!

  8. Hell, Brent should be inducted himself as a solo performer too . . .

This makes me sad for 10/15/76. Which means the last reel is indeed missing and the best we'll get is a combo with 10/14, which would be a phenomenal release alongside DiP18.

That reminds me of Dave's 19 (Hawaii '70). 1/23/70 is a solid show, and what is there from 1/24/70 is amazing, but the missing reel - ouch, it hurts.

The good news is this pick will be better than the last as that release was criminally bad. How they could allow that show to be released is beyond me. Easily the worst of all 27.

That was one of my favorite songs when I was a kid.

The drummer in Silver was Harry Stinson who now plays in Marty Stuart's Fabulous Superlatives, who are currently touring with Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman from the Byrds. "Handsome Harry" (as Marty calls him) also has a fine high harmony voice .

I think that Boise '83 is a strong show (for its era), but has a less than ideal mix (not enough Jerry, too much Brent, too much vocals).

I’d be down with that. As a funny little footnote, this was my second Dead concert, and based on the prior concert in May, my friends and i were prepared to settle in for a nice long concert w the Dead and the not-anywhere-near-the-same-level Iron Butterfly.

We just assumed the more serious musicianship of the Dead would prevail and they would naturally close out the concert w an extended jam and multiple encores. So you can imagine our shock and utter dismay to see the Dead take the stage first. We learned that, on the flip of a coin, it was determined that they would open for the Iron Butterfly. And if the ignominy of seeing our guys opening (choke) for an obviously-inferior and relatively-lightweight band wasn’t bad enough, to add insult to injury, any hope for an extended set was squashed!

Oh well, it could have been worse. I could have fixated on the Iron Butterfly and been seeking out their live recordings for the last 50 years.

10/18/72 please. They can even just give us the second set now and mail us the first set in January or whatever. More Dark Star’s please.

'I was there' comments on the archive say that the GD played so well that Iron Butterfly were reluctant to go on, and let the Dead keep playing for a while.

On the tape, Garcia does say something like 'goodnight, thanks....OK we have some more time, we're gonna play a little more,' after 'Turn on Your Lovelight'

It seems the band also opened for Iron Butterfly on their previous stop, in KC on February 5.

The St. Louis show seems to be the only one that circulates that is sourced from a master reel, the others from that tour are mostly cassettes (though 2-15 is also a master reel.)

The Velvet Underground and The Fugs also played on the bill. Now, if Bear recorded the whole night and Dave had it all together for a new release, THAT would be pretty damn exciting.

It saddens me to think the last Pick of the year has any less Passion and Verve than the first Pick of the new.
