It will be interesting to see what they have in store for the Europe 72 50th. I saw an interview with Mark Pinkus on the D&C stream and he said they found an interesting way to approach it.
I have #s 13-40 and would say my five favorites (not “best”, just my personal favorites) are, in release order, #23 1/22/78 #27 9/2/83 #29 2/26/77 #33 10/29/77 #34 6/23/74 Just outside of those, these also get regular play #13 2/23/74 # 18 7/17/76 #20 4/2/73 #40 7/18&19/90
I'm glad someone watched it. It's priceless humor in the vein of those "you're becoming your Dad" ads. I was holding my laughter just fine until he started talking about reading the article about "ripping" on Wikipedia. Just about lost it there...
I just hope they rerelease a bunch of the complete shows from the Europe 72 tour. Those have gotten ridiculously priced on the secondhand market.
I wish I had rated these as they were released. I never remember which ones I like and which ones I really like (black licerice)
I’ve liked this show for years and randomly about a week before they announced the release I made a joke on here about wanting an official release of Phil’s introduction. BAM! A week or so later Dave delivers
I didn’t mean to give everyone a homework assignment by asking for a top five Dave’s…(I know, I should’ve known with this crowd), but I’m sure happy to read everyone’s rankings. Also happy to see a lot of love for a few of the later ones that I have already managed to snag and have enjoyed, like DeKalb, Miami #34, and #30 from the Fillmore. Also pleasantly surprised by the amount of love #40 is still getting. As some others have mentioned, I think it’s the energy of the DeKalb show that really gets me. They seem like they are really enjoying themselves.
Oh, I just got a shipment notice on Dave’s Pick 41! Should be here sometime in the next 6 months, right?
This is your 1st year as DaP subscriber, correct (love your posts BTW)? I hope you do no receive dreaded copy #25,000 and 3 months late, it has proven that sonics get worse w/ numbers greater then #1 !
Yes, it is my first year (and thank you). If I get the dreaded 25K, I’ll probably figure Dave L. is hazing the wanna be Deadheads!
At the same time, it’s nice to have a library of shows to explore. For example, you might see one on the shelf and think, “Huh, I don’t recall this one. It must not be one of the good ones. Maybe I’ll play it again to see if it’s any good.” You subsequently play it and discover some good performances and small moments of improvisational glory mixed among its setlist. Win - win.
I was really into Magic the Gathering for a while quite a few years ago, but that's it for me. A quick look through my notes gives me an easy Dave's Picks top 5 - they're the only ones I gave top marks to: Volume 5 (11/17/73 Pauley Pavilion) Volume 13 (2//24/74 Winterland) Volume 16 (3/28/73 Springfield) Volume 23 (1/22/78 Eugene) Volume 32 (3/23/73 Spectrum) Even though they're all from the '70s, I'm very happy that the series has expanded into the '80s and '90s in a meaningful way the last couple of years.
