3 hours later I'm still contemplating. Love this tour but big expense for shows I've already listened too a bit. Also, I feel weird that part of my interest in buying this is a collector craving.
My best friend ordered this today and then I saw the thread here, Man, I am tempted to get this as I know I could easily flip this if I never open the set. I say this staring at a bunch of vinyl that I have ordered over the last couple of weeks and have not yet unsealed. But I have to say I love this tour so….
Been thinking about my 24lp pre-order. While I have the trunk, my particular system sounds better in many respects via vinyl front end. Glad I pre-ordered; gonna let it stand. Then there's this.... I agree with @slop101 and also mindful that the master can make a huge difference. As the lp's are getting remastered for this release, specifically for vinyl, I suspect an incredible result, dynamically speaking.
Although not an expert on what is or isn't brickwalled, I've experienced zero aural fatigue in listening to any of my quite extensive collection of GoGD CDs. So I agree 100%. I did experience some aural fatigue about 6-7 years ago when I listened to about 12-13 Dark Stars from '72 in a marathon session on a fateful Saturday afternoon/evening. I was walking around the house a bit dazed and posted that here, and in a Put the Lime in the Coconut context, the recommended cure was a listen to the 9/19/70 Dark Star. That was the perfect elixir. These nutbags were crazy.
Agreed, the Dead have always taken care that their releases are well mastered. However, a mastering specifically for vinyl off the hi-res transfer of the master should in theory sound better than the CD (IMO). At the very least it will be a unique mastering which is a special thing.
I didn’t mean to imply the dead’s CD’s were brick-walled. I was quoting a statement I agree with about CD’s in general, but even that wasn’t the point. Point is that a recording specifically remastered for vinyl “could” be superior in dynamics & other aspects compared to cd. As one that loves vinyl in”my system”, this release could be, and likely will be, magical.
I can understand the excitement with this but I cannot be bothered any more. Have the great sounding cds. A few Dick's Picks is a different story.. Hope you guys are happy with the end result!
Snagged the 5/26/72 CD’s and 3 disc CD “comp” for the car, love me some GD, love me some GD on vinyl but I agree that live GD on vinyl is not the best experience (I own 2 of 3 FW shows, DP (11/77), RSD 21 on vinyl). Still hoping for another CD only 72 related box set in 2022.
FOMO is strong with this one but I'm leaning towards a pass. FOMO got me on the LST Amazon 6-LP box and I haven't even opened it, preferring to watch the Blu-Ray...
Dave mentions other things planned for later in the year. I really hope we finally get a DVD and/or Blu-Ray "Europe '72" set featuring all the existing Beat Club and Copenhagen footage.
When I got the email, I was originally going to pass on the 24LP release. I have the steamer trunk and figured... why do I need this LP box. BUT, I have every other Dead show LP set released over the years (the RSD releases, Real Gone LPs, Rhino LP sets, Broovale Record sets, Rhino Records LP sets, etc) I decided to use the 10% off code and ordered. Basically that code covered the shipping and tax to bring it down to list price.
So as far as the CD releases, DeadNet says that the Europe ‘72 new release is remastered, but no mention of remastering the new 5/26/72 show. Not much to inspire me unless it’s a sonic or mixing upgrade on both.
I'm in. And I wonder, if they will release more complete concerts from that tour on vinyl. Dave mentioned that there will be more releases out through the year. I'm not sure if he means more "Europe '72" releases. Maybe we'll get a remastered reissue of "Sunshine Daydream". I have one in my collection but the prices on the 2nd market are extremely high now so that they will make lots of people happy with a vinyl reissue of Veneta 8/27/72 for sure.
This is a beautiful piece for sure. I have a lot of the Dicks and Daves....all the ones with Pig Pen for sure. I am an older Dead fan at heart....Pig Pen was so great...loved his stuff. Seen the Dead 20 some times, never saw them with PP. I always thought E72 was the last great Dead...after that PP was gone. However, with time I got wiser so now I have a variety of old and new stuff. I have the steamer E72...its great save the cardboard cd holders tear easy. I got the color vinyl set...like it! I am on the fence for price and size....not bad just thinking about where do I put it as we are in Apt now...back to house in 1.5 years we think...I can afford it, but so much other stuff keeps coming out I try to spread it around. I think it is fantastic though and I hope buyers will enjoy it! I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed!
Well, i consult the nearly 12 hour dark star 72 often...for hours at a time....and no fatigue yet! archive.org/details/DarkStar_1972 Playlist: Now with timestamps! 00:00:00 03/23/1972 New York [Verse 1] 00:21:04 04/08/1972 London 00:47:52 04/14/1972 Copenhagen 01:15:04 04/17/1972 Copenhagen 01:43:44 04/24/1972 Dusseldorf 02:20:32 04/29/1972 Hamburg 02:48:40 05/04/1972 Paris 03:19:44 05/07/1972 Wigan 03:35:52 05/11/1972 Rotterdam 03:48:32 05/18/1972 Munich 04:02:00 05/23/1972 London 04:28:16 05/25/1972 London 04:58:28 07/18/1972 Jersey City 05:52:40 07/26/1972 Portland 05:44:29 08/21/1972 Berkeley 06:05:28 08/24/1972 Berkeley 06:28:28 08/27/1972 Veneta 06:57:20 09/10/1972 Hollywood 07:26:17 09/16/1972 Boston 07:49:45 09/21/1972 Philadelphia 08:21:31 09/24/1972 Waterbury 08:48:42 09/27/1972 Jersey City 09:11:21 10/18/1972 St. Louis 09:26:41 10/26/1972 Cincinnati 09:45:29 10/28/1972 Cleveland 10:05:37 11/13/1972 Kansas City 10:23:29 11/19/1972 Houston 10:43:01 11/26/1972 San Antonio 10:48:37 12/11/1972 San Francisco 11:20:24 12/15/1972 Long Beach 11:40:42 07/26/1972 Portland [for Verse 2]
I think this is an important question. I ordered and am now a little worried about this. In my limited experience, the Dead site is not especially customer service heavy. Has anyone had any experience getting replacement vinyl discs from the Dead site, or can we expect a decent chance of a 1+ week passing before getting any kind of email response, etc.? I hope they are planning to be equipped to handle inevitable replacement requests. I mean, if I were selling box sets with 24 LPs in them, I would almost expect 10-20% or so of customers to be reaching out about a disc or two in their set.
I too restrained myself and opted for the color vinyl. As for the thin and tight CD cases in the E 72 trunk, I heard about the tearing issue early on and have spent the past eleven years very carefully removing the CDs with the caution and delicacy of a brain surgeon getting his sweaty brow sponged by a nurse, and haven’t lost a patient yet.
I’ve never had to get a replacement LP from them, but they’ve always been quick to respond when I’ve contacted them. And, as I’ve mentioned on one thread or another, they quickly sent me a replacement DaP when I had one go missing in the mail a couple years ago.
I ordered 5/26 on CD, but what is the 3CD comp? Do you just mean the remaster of the original album? Legit curious -- if there is another comp, I want it!
