To paraphrase Harry Callahan, another San Francisco icon, that's a .357 Magnum of Dark Star. It could blow your head clean off!.
This thread has inspired me to play a few sides of "Sunshine Daydream" vinyl tonight...I just VPI cleaned all eight sides last Saturday!
Slept on it I’m one of the new live converts from 6 months ago the Olympia Paris tuned me on turned me in i’m a DS, TOO, MD sparse extended improv guy think King Crimson 72-74 the St Louid 2 lp improv set and PNW 3cd sampler have that punch i was playing the recent DP 19 vinyl box 1974 OK Dark Star side. Nice warmth, sounded lovely The detail was sublime wish they did 3 distinct shows across the tour not a single stand in one city That said Just bought Pacific NW $300 too much more earmarked to the Dead And Mofi one steps, Acoustic Sounds $125 for something you already own 8” of vinyl shelf space So much other music to get too Tidal has flac quality streaming of the whole 1972 Euro tour Have Euro 72 v1 v2 vinyl Olympia RSD Stepping out, rotterdam other cds I play lp sides, rarely whole shows in vinyl Cd - most of a show some lp sides would rarely be touched HAVE TO STOP THIS ‘MUST BUY’ MADNESS How fast will 4,500 sell out? may wait for the first reviews
While I appreciate the fact they are actually putting these out on vinyl. This is a hard pass for me. 1.I already have the complete CD set and it is already fantastic and Plangent processed. Yes a few of the shows could have been mixed differently but overall that set is all I could want. 2. I already have the original Europe 72 on Vinyl and CD, and Hundred Year Hall 3. The price for this set is simply out of hand for a total of 3 shows (granted they are long shows but it is still $200 per show!) 4. GD just doesn't really do it for me on vinyl because the long jams have to be split up. GD vinyl where the songs are shorter is stellar but live Dead just has too many issues on vinyl. 5. I would have gone for a Blu Ray Audio set instead.
Can someone lay some color on these four shows How upbeat was the band The general context versus the tour at large How much variation from show to show The recordings (know they used the same reel to reel multis) but is there sonic differences each night On night, off night Thanks
Most new records are selling for around $25.00 a piece these days, and this set contains 24 discs which adds up to $25.00 a piece. Now that doesn’t include the box and booklet either, so this set isn’t outrageously expensive. It’s simply a ton of wax all at once, which makes for a huge outlay of cash all at once. All the recent vinyl releases from the Grateful Dead have been mastered for vinyl by Chris Bellman @ Bernie Grundman Mastering, and they have all sounded outstanding. The Real Gone have been mastered slightly different but for the most part, they’ve been excellent as well. So there’s no reason to think that this set will be any different. As far as returning a defective disc, dead.net has been absolutely amazing about returns in my experience. I’ve returned defective CD’s from the Dave’s Picks Series without any problems, and also a few vinyl pressings with satisfactory results. And no doubt with 24 discs there may well be an issue or two to deal with. I completely understand those who aren’t financially solvent at this particular moment being put off by the price tag, and I’ve been there myself at times, and ultimately had to pay ridiculous after market prices. So I totally get it. But this set is NOT over priced for what is included.
I’m fully aware of that because I paid for some of those releases because I was slightly late to the party. Yikes
I was late at some releases too. Anyway, I'm in with the Lyceum box and I'm really looking forward to it. I hope that they will release the whole tour on vinyl.
Indeed, my wife and I have spent a small fortune catching up with many of the Box Sets, Road Trips, and Dave’s Picks, etc etc etc…. But once we caught up we have grabbed everything as soon as its up for preorder. The Grateful Dead is our passion (musically speaking) and so far we’ve absolutely loved everything that’s been released. This next Box Set is one for the ages and we ordered within minutes of receiving the Email to preorder. We probably won’t live long enough to see the whole tour on vinyl, but we’ll get as many as possible.
I would have preferred one show and 3 or 4 lps of highlights from the three shows from London Like they did with the St Louis show and extended improv songs 2 lp set Also the 4 London shows available on cd
As good a time as any I think. I was six in September of 1962. Music has been my therapy for 60 years now, and enriched my life in the most profound ways. Hard to describe really, but I’m sure there are many others who have had the same experience.
They charge the moment you hear about it, want it, but think that it's way too expensive for you to get. They know then that the hook is baited.
