Yeh, Eloy also comes to mind. And Guru-guru. And Grobschnitt. And early Tangerine Dreams. Come to think of it kraut did not have "great songs"... but lots of great albums.

I won’t argue (despite what I said before), and “Bright Side” certainly had the best chance of being a hit single. But I still don’t think they rank with Van’s very best.

I might agree if not for DIY and White Shadow-- both perfectly great songs.

  5. "Egypt Station" by Paul McCartney kind of comes to mind. I can tell you my 5 or so faves, but only "Domino" feels like it would end up on a compilation, but It's such a terrific album. One where the whole definately does exceed the sum of its parts!

The same might be said of one of my other fave albums of this year "There's A Riot Going On" by Yo La Tengo. Feels more of a piece, with just a couple real standout tracks to speak of, but still an album I really connected to & adore.

That feeling of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts is true of my vert favorite album of the year too- the vert recently released "Warm" by Jeff Tweedy (11/30/18), but that one does have great songs on it.

And The Healing Has Begun disqualifies this one, imo.

I was silly walking to my computer, sat down and read this silly thread. Tomorrow another long day at the Ministry of Silly Walks, sigh....It's quite the silly life sometimes, isn't it?

Never look forward to elections anymore, but, with that being said, I'm really psyched for the Silly Olympics in the year 2021 1/2. They promise to be quite the spectacle.

    Carry on.

As much as I like Pete - and I like his music a lot - I've never embraced the 1st 2 solo albums. "3" and "Security" are great, "So" and "Us" are very good, and "Up" has its moments.

The first two just never did it for me...

With respect I feel that you may have misunderstood my comment, for example `PORNOGRAPHY` is one of the best albums ever made, but with lyrics like....

    "Shapeless in the dark again
In the hanging garden please don't speak
In the hanging garden no one sleeps
In the heat of the night the animals scream
Cover my face as the animals cry
    In the hanging garden
    Fall fall fall fall
    Out of the sky
Cover my face as the animals die"
    . (edited).

I don`t think that the only possible single from the album `The Hanging Gardens`, was ever likely to bother the charts.

I really like the surf instrumental that closes Lumpy Gravy. It also has a bit of a Motown groove. I actually really like the whole album except for that dumb car talk that seems like it will never end

I think "Bright Side of the Road," "Full Force Gale" and "And the Healing Has Begun" at a minimum are great songs (as well as "Game/You Know What They're Writing About").

Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut" is in my top 5 albums of all time list, but there is not ONE song from that I could play to anyone to give them an example of how great this album it. It MUST be heard all the way through to be properly appreciated. (MY opinion only, not looking for an argument).

Portishead - S/t. It's every bit as brilliant as Dummy, and perhaps even better, but none of the songs are particularly great, or even necessarily impressive on their own (with the possible exception of All Mine).

Great thread idea, by the way!

    Not even "Tried So Hard"???
I would also toss in "On The Air" and "Exposure" for good measure, but I seem to like his second album more than most folks.

Truly love it, but admit even its best songs sound out of place on Mats playlists, Best Ofs, etc.

I'm going to vote for: Billie Holiday's Music for Torching.

No great songs - it's all in the execution.

What would be a title and song that non Kinks fans would know of?
    I love the band myself.
